I have successfully upgraded my MBP to Big Sur from Catalina. Now it's time for a TM BU. The first thing I've noticed is the potential BU is huge. I could use a another external drive but I don't have one available. The Catalina BU is on a 6TB external drive that I use exclusively for BU's. If I continue with the same BU as Catalina, will I be able to revert to Catalina in the future if needed by simply pointing to the last day I did a Catalina BU?

My advice is to buy another external drive and do the TM backups for Big Sur on it rather than use the same drive which contains your Catalina backups.

Yes, you can continue to use the same drive and it is possible to revert to Catalina from it, however, it's best to keep them separate.

I agree. Here is my experience with the BS betas:

I continued doing BS TM backups to the Catalina backup disk. All fine. But when I reverted to Catalina I was limited to choosing only one of the Catalina backups for recovery.

Possibly, but my experience was not good. I could not choose the last Catalina backup when I did it.

Advice:
If you think you might want to revert then keep the Catalina backups completely untouched by BS.

Ok I just finished the BU. I decided to not BU using my last Catalina and did a fresh Big Sur back up.
