Is it ok to put a running hard drive in drawer??

I would assume you wouldn't want to do this but I have to much stuff on my desk and it's driving me nuts!

I have a very basic desk with a keyboard drawer that has a hole in the back for wires. It's some what roomy and nothing else is stored in there. Would it be safe for the hard drive to be stored while plugged into the computer/running?

You'll just want to be aware of the heat build up and have a way to circulate it out. Then you'll need to ensure there are no bumps or bangs on the drawer while its running because you don't want the heads to crash on the platter.

My ext HDD stored in this dock, that's not much difference than put that in a drawer. No ventilation at all, and a USB 3 hub right next to it (more heat, less air). Interestingly, this the the coolest HDD in my Mac. All internal HDD run at or above 40C, but the ext USB 3 HDD only run at 35C.

Most external drives are inside enclosures with no cooling anyway, and use low-power hard drives such as the WD Green.

It will be absolutely fine, just don't jerk the drawer open while writing data to the drive.
