I remember reading a thread on this long ago and tried to search for it but no luck.

I hear that using the macbook with the battery in on AC power will drain the battery dramatically. Is it ok to take out the battery and use the macbook on AC power without the battery? Is it safe?

It's usually better to leave the battery in. Assuming the machine is calibrated properly each month, the battery won't be overcharged whilst plugged in and if it isn't plugged in, you might get dirt and muck on the connectors. This could then lead to short-circuiting or bad power throughput. For most users, I'd say it's best to keep it plugged in. :)

most users?

who would you consider to be in this group "most?"

crap....I don't think I calibrated my battery the first time. maybe this is why coconut battery shows 98% max??

NOOOO!!

Yes it is okay to use a macbook without power. This however exposes the battery connections to dirt and dust. Leave your computer in this state for extended periods of time may cause problems with the battery connections.

Well, if you're pedantic about keeping your desk clean and it's not in a dusty place, plus if you're using it almost exclusively from the power adaptor, then I guess it'd be worthwhile taking the battery out. However, for the relatively small potential gain in battery lifespan, I don't think it's worth it considering the damage that could be done if dirt and dust collects at the connectors. :)

Calibrate your battery now, and once every month. :)
