Do any of you guys see an issue with me placing a computer tower (Dell) on carpeting? I personally doubt static electricity could damage the internals of the computer as long as the case is on it, but I just wanted to make sure. Unfortunately, I can't fit the tower in my desk so I really have no other option.

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Especially since the computer frame is going to be made of metal, and it will be grounded at the socket.

Everyone I know who has a tower puts it on the carpet in fact. Carpeted dorms at school...

I reckon your problem would be more from dust than anything related to static electricity. There's a lot of crud on the ground in carpet that is just itching to get sucked into a cooling fan.

A dell that's running after 5 years.?!

She didn't say anything about it running... :p ;)

"It's fine" could mean any number of things.

my PC and my mac are both on carpet and they're fine.. just don't cover up any air vents..

HA!

My first and only Dell ran for 5 years, then it crapped out all at once...video card, then hard drive, then motherboard. That's when I got smart and got a mac.:D

Dust is the thing. Clean it out a couple of times a year.

You'll be surprised how fast it collects.

Yeah I know, that worries me with my iMac actually, since it's not supposed to be opened by end users :/ (rev c).

you also be surpise at how much less dust that will be in you computer if you raise it up just a few inches off the floor.

the biggest draw back to being on the floor is dust. There is going to be a lot more in the computer because it not a few inches off the floor. As for running not a problem. People run comptuers on the floor for years with out an issue.

Very true, I raised my tower about 2" an it collected a lot less dust. But I still clean it out 2-3 times a year.
