I'm not sure if my macbook is on or not! It isn't turning on and the the screen is completely black, however, the white light at the front edge of the computer turns on when I fold the mac so that it closes.

How do I turn it on (if its not already on) and get it working?

It's completely new so there shouldn't be any problems with it.

Try just pressing a key or something. It might need to wake up the screen. Also make sure the backlight is turned right up. FN+F2 should turn it up, or F2...

Ah you make me laugh...

More than likely, it had kernel panic before the backlight of your display came on. You can check by shining a flashlight through the Apple on the back or see if you can see the screen contents in a well lit area.

To reboot, press and hold the power button til the led light turns off. Then press the power button again to boot it up. OS X may tell you it had problems where you can then forward a report to Apple.

In any case, I would suggest you call Applecare.

make sure your monitor isn't set to shut off before the screen saver starts. if it is, then obviously you'll never see your screen saver as your monitor will be off before you get a chance to.

that's my shot at a diagnosis.

Good Idea, I'll check! But where can I check the time it takes for the screen to shut off?
