In the olden days, double clicking on the top bar of the window would collapse the window in to the top bar. I think this might have been referred to as Window Shade?

I'm not sure if I'm just not able to find this feature in the new (and dysfunctional) System Settings or if it's just not a thing that's ever existed in MacOS X. I know that Stickies retains this function.

Might there be a third party app to enable this?
Edit: Found an answer to this
I guess that means this is not a native function. Close thread.

To be more specific, I'm really interested in doing this with TextEdit because I use it all day to paste random notes and it can get unruly. If Stickies were able to strip out formatting, I might consider using it.

I think you might be looking for something like this?

Never have used it myself. Caveat emptor.

Thanks. I was in the middle of editing my OP before you responded. I found the same app. Giving it a whirl now.

Yeah.. That's gonna be a no for me.

I remember that from the old days, and I just checked and it still works for me; double-click in empty space between window title and window tools icons minimizes the window to the dock. Just like the yellow button in the top left of mac windows, the red, yellow and green, so-called 'traffic lights'. I think I've used those for the last decade or two. Red = close, yellow = minimize, green = maximize (fullscreen in new space).

In OS 9 (prior to the existence of the dock) it would hide the window but keep the title bar. That functionality disappeared with OS X.

Windowmizer is cool but if you allow disabling SIP the implementation could be done better. Surprised I haven't seen a simbl plugin for this yet, closest thing was AfloatX
