is it possible to connect my MacBook to my iMac?

looking to hook my blacbook up to my iMac when I'm at my desk, is there any way to?
at the moment I am mounting the HDDs to each other via the network (as they are both on the same wireless network)
but file transfers take forever

is there a way to do this via firewire? (Like targetdisk mode..only, where both machines can be running)
or even ethernet?

Thing is, I also need to connect my external Lacie FW drive, it's attached to the iMac, but I need to be able to access it from my macbook when at my desk, I trued 2 firewire cables into the Lacie and then into my machinees, but it won't mount on both, so I need to mount it on the blackbook, via the iMac....but not wirelessly...does that make sense?

this is the first time I've had to run 2 machines at the same time, bit of a nightmare.

You should be able to plug them into each other via ethernet -- just a direct ethernet link. You might need a crossover cable, but I think you don't even need that. You'll get much faster transfer speeds.

hooked it up, but now it only let's me mount the actual HDD.

Connect your Macs together via a firewire cable just as if you were going use target disk mode. Thats it, full speed file transfers. Well, with Windows networking anyways. I'm pretty sure AppleTalk or whatever it's called these days supports firewire file transfers aswell. You might have to disable the Airport on one of the machines to make sure the connection goes through the firewire interface and not the wireless one. I haven't had to, but my friend has. Even if you do, you can share your internet connection over firewire. Well I'm relitivley certain all of that will work anyways....I haven't actully tried this Mac>Mac only Mac>PC and PC>Mac.

This is all thanks to a lovely thing known as internet protocol over firewire, Windows fully supports it to (but won't after XP-stupid Microsoft)

For mounting external HDD, you can try making a shortcut or something on the internal HDD, but I haven't tried that and it isn't likely to work.
