Not sure where to post this.

I will receive my Macbook Air in a few days. I want to create an Apple Id but it does not appear possible if I am not the owner of a cell phone.

I talked to Apple support person and that's what he confirmed although he did not appeared knowledgeable. So is this real? You cannot use a Mac if you don't have a cell???

Thank you

A quick Google search says they require a phone number but doesn't say it has to be a cell but perhaps that's the only kind people have in 2021. I created mine ages ago and didn't have a phone at all LOL

In the comments to the article you posted "Doesn’t work, the sign-up form requires a phone number, and you can’t confirm your account without it"... I suspect things have changed since the article was written

I bet this is Apple's way to ensure one AppleID per person to stop those trying to avoid paying for extra storage by getting multiple iCloud accounts.

Thanks but I do have a device (a Mac and an old iPad) and a credit card but I have no cell phone number.

Let us know if there’s a solution when you get your MacBook. You may have to go take it to the Apple Store and get them to create you an account. I don’t think they would make it where you can’t use the computer without a phone number 😂. There has to be some sort of back up registration from the MacBook
