Hello everyone!

I wonder if it possible to find out if an iMac have been used before but sold as new.

The case is that i know someone returned a iMac 27" in the same store where i bought my iMac 27" a couple of weeks ago.

I know the user updated it to yosemite, and it have been deleted and reinstalled yosemite so all data was gone, the new owner could just register to use it and start on a clean computer.

In this case I'm unsure if i got a used product, my iMac came with mavericks 10.9.4 but i guess it easily could be reinstalled over the yosemite?

Wonder if it´s possible to track it inside the computer if it have been used before or reinstalled back to mavericks?

Many thanks for any reply on this case, strange question but i just want to ask about it :)

I'm not sure if there is a way to track if it has been used and reverted back. We order a lot of Macs where I work and it the last ones we got new that still had Mavericks on them were running 10.9.4 so it does match that. You can also go to the web address below and see if it has been registered to someone else.

I don't know where you live. But in some countries (the UK and NZ which I know about) this is illegal. It is probably unlikely that Apple would try to circumvent this because they would be in the doo doo pretty quickly.

Did you buy the iMac from the Apple Store? If so, I'd be surprised that it contained an old O.S. I bet Apple Store product inventory turns over quickly.

But if you bought the computer from another retailer, then it's very possible that you bought a computer that had been sitting on a shelf for a while. Maybe only for a couple months would be old enough for the older O.S. to be loaded on it.

No it was not bought from applestore but a apple reseller.
I don't want to post out the name case I'm wrong so I do not ruin the rumors of some reseller :)

Did it come with the stock Mavericks version of the iWork apps? If so, chances are that it was running an image of 10.9.4 like the one that came on my Mac mini new out of the box. This wouldn't 100% guarantee that it was brand new, but does increase the likelihood of it having been imaged at the factory.

Unless there were any other clues to it having been used before (for example, a broken seal) it was probably new and had been sitting on the shelf for a while.

Edit: This is assuming a late 2013 iMac. Also, if the iWork apps are not present then it is almost certainly a non-factory install.

Quick and dirty method, check the SMART status of the hard drive and see how many on/off cycles and hours of operations it has been in service.
