So I got my i7 iMac and at first everything was great with it, apart from the loud HDD which I was not bothered about. But recently I booted it up and it had 4 dead pixels, I phoned Apple up and they arranged a replacement.

But now I've been thinking more, I really do not want the i7 anymore, I would much rather have a Macbook Pro.
Now my replacement has not arrived yet, not even shipped yet, but I have sent my defective i7 back.

So would it be possible for me to get a refund without paying a restocking fee? Also, how much is the restocking fee?

Thanks in Advance!:)

I can answer this from the in-store perspective.

When my 27" C2D had a yellow screen, I took it in for an exchange and decided to upgrade to i5. They didn't charge me. I would think you could get the same treatment. I would call customer relations asap and tell them what you want. Tell them that you want to switch to MBPro because of the risk of getting the 27" defects. Be nice, super polite, and I'm sure they'll hook you up.

If it is within 14 days I don't think there will be a restocking fee.

Otherwise I would call Apple. As much as people pretend to be experts round here I'm certain Apple have the upper hand when it comes to the ins-and-outs of their return policy ;)

There's always a 10% restocking fee, even within the 14-day period. You need to have a legit problem for them to wave it, which is why I suggested what I suggested.

10%? Why the hell should you have to pay 10% if you want a refund? Isn't that only applicable if you somehow do not have the original boxes and that kind of stuff?

If the box is opened, you can be asked to pay the restocking fee. Seems reasonable enough – potentially puts off abusers who think they'll get free use of an iMac for a couple of weeks while their own computer is broken, or a laptop to take on a trip and then returned for refund.

If the box is unopened, you get all your money back. As it happens, I've never been charged a restocking fee when I've changed my mind and requested to change the opened item for something else.

Be super polite. I'm sure they will accomodate. Apple has excellent customer service (from my three experiences anyway.)

Super polite is the key! Just let them know after your few days of use you realize the desktop was not the right choice and you really need a laptop instead.

You will get a refund. Be genuine when speaking to an apple rep. Get what you really want. I bought an iMac 3 years ago because it was cheaper and should have got a MacBook Pro. It worked out in the end as my iMac is now a Torrent machine and my MacBook pro is my main computer.
