Title says it all. I have an atv1 I'd like to use purely as a streaming device, and the functionality is limited in the ATV 1 wrt the iPhone remote.
 
I just found the answer to my own question.

Even though ATV1 doesn't show up as an AirPlay device in the iPad music app, it can be controlled via Apple's Remote app on the iPad or iPhone. Problem solved.
