Hi. I am coming from a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra to a 14 Pro Max. This is my first iPhone and in some ways I'm noticing a definite learning curve. I thought that I was going to miss the fingerprint sensor but Face ID is so far ahead of it that I don't miss it at all. My phone instantly unlocked last night when I was in a mostly dark room. It's amazing.

Anyway, my question is, is there some way to turn the screen off but keep the phone unlocked. It's kind of annoying me when the phone is sitting on the desk and I get a notification and I have to pick the phone up and look at it to unlock it. On the Note 20, I could set an amount of time that the phone would remain unlocked for. It'd be nice if it would stay unlocked.

Thanks

Yes, you've got auto lock options. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto Lock. You can set it to Never but your battery life will take a hit, but I'm sure you know that.

Doesn't that just keep the screen on all of the time? I want the screen to continue to turn off and I want to be able to turn it back on and go to the home screen without having to unlock it again.

It can be done...but then you can't use Face ID to unlock your iPhone (can still use Face ID for other things though).

In Face ID & Passcode settings, turn off 'iPhone Unlock'.
Then under 'Require Passcode', change it to a timeframe you'd like. (If you only see 'Immediately', leave Settings and go back in to see the other options.)

I might pick up an Apple Watch at some point. I understand that the watch can keep the phone unlocked. But right now I just need to get used to the iPhone. It is so radically different from what I'm used to. :)

Yeah, it's strange we can't change the 'Require Passcode' setting when using Face ID for unlocking. FWIW, my phone will unlock using Face ID when it's laying in front of me or slightly off to the side on my desk. Maybe it's still learning, or a new scan will help.

Also, the Apple Watch doesn't keep the phone unlocked. It can be used to unlock the phone if there's a partial obstruction or if you're wearing a mask. If it's way off to the side or can't see your face at all, the watch won't unlock it.

I have a whole keyboard tray and half a desk in front of me and my phone sits on the desk. I have room on my keyboard tray to put my phone and maybe that would work. Thanks for the info about the watch. On the old Samsung, my Garmin watch would keep the phone unlocked for a set amount of time. I could also keep the phone unlocked by its proximity to my router and it used some form of geofencing so I could have it unlocked near my house based on GPS.

Of course all of that only worked as it was supposed to less than half of the time.
