I enrolled in the public beta program. Went to disk utility and added a new volume.

I go to system preferences. Download the beta. But it doesn't give me the option to install it onto another volume? I can't find the installer app anywhere... Instead, it wants to restart the Mac. I assume it will just install on the parent volume.

Did I do wrong? Why isn't it opening the installer where I can pick what volume to install the update on?

You can install the beta onto an external drive if you wish.

As I type this, I have just upgraded to the latest beta and it's running from an external SSD. My "regular OS" is Mojave.

When you start the OS installer, it will give you the option of WHERE to install.
You should have an external drive "ready and waiting", connected up.
It should be pre-erased to "APFS, GUID partition format".
It can be either an SSD (recommended) or a platter-based hard drive.
