Is there any way that I can simulate a display resolution above native? I have the iMac 21.5'' that comes with the 1080p display and I am disappointed with that resolution (I can see the pixels at about 8'' from it whereas on a Retina I can't).

Simulate, yes, but you will still see the pixels. The image simply compresses. If you want to give it a try, look for a program called "RDM." The lightning bolts on that app indicates high DBP. I have two of each resolution but the high DPI have higher quality icons. They didn't explain that well.
