Is it possible to stop updates in the app store?

I have got some applications that I don't want to update, but the little red number next to the App Store on my dock is getting quite annoying. Is it possible to remove the red number next to the app, but still have the updates available when you actually open the app store?

Why don't you want to update?
Try signing out of the app store, then launch the app store but don't sign in. It should go away.

Take the App store icon off your dock. You can still access from Applications folder when need be.
