Out of curiosity, I dug out my 120GB portable SSD and tried to install a fresh High Sierra on it, hoping I could upgrade it straight into Big Sur.

NOPE.

After installing the configuration package, all Apple gives is a bunch of other software updates including a seemingly beta version of Safari but that’s about it. All the tutorials I found online are upgraded from Catalina.

I know when Big Sur is released in September there will be App Store download so upgrade would not be an issue. But for now, is there any way to upgrade straight to Big Sur without downloading Catalina?

You will need to use the createinstallmedia to build a bootable USB drive, and then you can install directly.


Download installer, run package, it will put the installer in Applications.



Then follow this tutorial:
