Firstly, let me apologize if this has been a very redundant topic that may have been answered before. I am a college student and my campus has Wifi all over it. My parents just bought me a new iPhone 3GS for christmas from the AT&T store. My two year contract renewal was not up for 6 months, but my Mom's was however. She is the main person on the account, and she is eligible for the renewal phone discount every year. So, my parents purchased the iPhone using her discount, and also signed up for the data plan (the AT&T rep said we had to and there was no way around it). My ideal goal is to use the iPhone only on the campus Wifi or my apartments Wifi if I need to use data. I would like to cancel the data plan if that is possible. I would like to download apps for the phone through my main downloading website Warez-BB (have a rapidshare account). So far, I have come to the conclusion that I would need to unlock and jailbreak my iPhone for me to be able to transfer these downloaded apps and games to the phone. So now I ask, what should be my plan of action? I have been searching the forums for days now, and have not found a definitive answer.

Here are some options of what I have found so far:

Option 1 : Just use an APN changer like the one at this website which i found on another forum (http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/). Not sure what else I would have to do after that or even how to use it.

Option 2 : I think I have this right. I would need to activate my iPhone (using my simcard already or someone elses who has a iPhone), then take my simcard and call AT&T from my old phone, and try to get them to cancel my data plan. Here where I kinda draw a blank. What could I tell AT&T to get them to remove my data plan? Because from what I have heard so far on the forums, it is very hard to get AT&T to cancel the data plan. If I managed to get this accomplished, then just put my simcard back into the iPhone and it works?

I have also considered putting the WIXBlock (i think) on it, so that I don't get any other data charges. I have no problem with this. I am still a little hazy regarding the whole jailbreaking process, and specifically when I should do it (before/after try to cancel the data plan). Sorry this is long, but I wanted to explain my whole situation. So, I am asking for any advise on what I should do next. Please comment on my plan(s) or give me a whole new approach. Thank you very much in advance for any help, you will be a life saver!!

It is very simple. Put you sim in any regular phone, then call Att and tell them you are no longer using the iPhone and wish to remove the data plan. They will take it off. You may ask them to put a data block on your line, but if you do this you will not be able to recieve or send MMS. What I did was to enable the apn changer profile. That's all you need, you will never use data from the network. It's that simple.

Do you like never plan on leaving campus:confused:

This block data use wifi plan seems good on paper but the more you use your iPhone the more you realize that its when you dont have wifi that you really need to use data(3g).

Plus if your parents signed up for the data plan i am sure they are okay with playing for it.
