... stuff a 3.5'' hard-drive in the Mac Mini?

Its a dumb question, I know. But I figure that the only thing dumber is not asking. :p
 
Actually, yes, it is possible, but you'll need to permanently remove the logic board and optical drive to fit it in, so it's not probably the solution you're looking for.
 
No - not enough space, but I have seen it where folks have run an sata extension out of the mini and connect to a 3.5 in an enclosure to gain better performance at a reasonable cost.

That is what I'm thinking of doing actually. I plan on picking up a Lacie 500 GB external drive (the one that fits nicey under the Mac Mini) and install Leopard on that drive. Then, if all goes according to plan, use the internal hard-drive in the mini as a time-machine backup location. Its kind of backwards...
