i am switching to at&t when my contract is up/summer. is it possible to buy the iphone and use the cool features without having a contract. is it possible to just use the iphone for itunes until then or would it just be best to buy a touch?

es you can jailbreak the phone to only use it as a touch for the time being. If you live in America you may even be able to unlock it to use you current sim card.

If you don't want to use the iPhone as a phone why get it? I mean I could not really see why people wanted to do it before the Touch came out, but now with the Touch it seems really silly to buy the iPhone to not use as a phone.

You have a couple of options, some of which have already been stated:

1) Hack the iPhone and use how you want, however this will in most cases void the warranty if you can't get the original DB reinstalled. With this method you can use the iPhone as an iTouch

2) You can use the iPod/Video functions without a hacked phone but you will have to activate it first then inactivate the account. It is the only way to get it into iTunes and use the Store.

3) You can wait...You say this summer is when your current account ends. I would recommend that you wait or buy an iPod touch for the interim because sometime this summer, probably around June or later, they will be releasing version 2 which should have alot more functionality and capabilies...we hope. Then get that phone and you will have the most recent to go with your new 2 year AT&T plan.

Hope this Helps...Good Luck!

Probably a good idea, however...I would read all available material that you can on the touch...it may already have what you need or can get buy with. IMHO hacking is just to risky with an expensive product and with Apple updating software an average of every 6 weeks...then you are faced with do I upgrade?, is there a new hack?, why won't my gadget work? Just too many variables with Apple.

I have nothing against hackers and even respect them for what they are able to do, change and create...I wish I was that good. But for me, hacking is just not worth the headaches and heartache if it all goes south.

Good Luck on your Decision and Have a great Holiday Season!
