Ok, I am finally ready to drop some cash on a new macbook pro! Santa Rosa is here, the GPU is updated and 2Gb is standard.
I got approved for ADC, so now I can get a MBP for a great price!

BUT!!!!!!

There are all these complaints about quality control!!! One of the reasons I wanted a mac was to get away from cheap hardware and software. Right now, I am frankly scared to pull the trigger. I have been talking smack about how macs are better machines and worth their extra cost...boy will I have egg on my face if I get stuck with a lemon!

So what do people here think? Are there many wide spread problems? IS it true that all Samsung displays have the yellow tint? MBP owners, please give me your stats

If you can wait I would wait for Leopard. If you need to buy one now buy one now. It sounds like most Apple reps are lenient enough where they are willing to let you exchange your machine multiple times until you are fully satisfied.

Don't worry, odds are you won't get a machine with defaults. People tend to complain when there's something wrong with their machine. I've got a perfect MBP sittin' here, boy am I happy. Trust me, Apple products might seem like they're riddled with defects, but just a small, tiny fraction are.

Ive had problems with mine recently, but it would take more than a few crashed and hardware problems to make me feel like i've wasted my money..

Then again, ive still got to take it back for repair so ask me again in a few days :p :p

I understand that you're worried about putting down your money for a potentially faulty product, but you need to use the search feature. There have been almost a dozen threads on this in the past two weeks. That said, I voted for the "no defects" option. My mbp (bought in the first week, Friday) is perfect. I also have a matte screen, if that makes a difference to you.

My MBP has been quite perfect. It may or may not have the yellow tint, it looks like it when it is starting up, but any other time it is impossible to see (I have had 5 other people look at it and they can't see it). So I'm pretty sure no yellow on mine.

Only complaint aside from that would be the sound being absolute crap if you are using low impedance headphones (specifically the ipod earbuds). Sound is great with my Sennheiser headphones though. As far as I know all the MBPs have this problem, just you will never notice it unless you plug in some earbuds.

I just got my mbp like a week ago and I switched form being a windows user. I'm really happy I did. The only thing I don't like about my mbp is there isn't many games (will be installing Vista) and when I close my mbp is doesn't fit tightly. Those are my only complains, it's well worth it in my opinion. I voted for the minor defect.

I have the samsung display and I don't have a yellowish screen. I think apple must of fixed the problem, cause all the threads I've read most of them were the first releases. Not sure though. You can always change it in for a different mbp if you don't like the screen.

With some trepidation - based on the posts here - I took the plunge and recently purchased an MBP. And I can't say enough about how happy I am with my decision. My MBP is perfect.

Bought mine two weeks ago tomorrow (specs in sig). It has a (fantastic) LG screen. I voted for no defects, but the front edging of my case (to the left of the IR sensor) is bent inwards & was when I took it out of the box. I don't think this qualifies as a defect though.

My 10-day-old beloved creature has no defects, AFAIK.

Another thing. I don't get why people keep saying to wait for Leopard. The $200 iPod rebate + the 2-3 months of enjoyment waaaay offsets buying it with Leopard and/or iLife, IMHO.

To summarize: Go for it!

Okay, afraid I'm going to answer a question with a question: are you using tech sites like Macfixit or Macintouch to get any info on this?

These two sites are great generally - if there are any widespread problems affecting a huge proportion of machines, you would read about them there, but there isn't. Not saying that you definitely won't have any problems, but there's no reason to hold off buying now if you need/want the machine.

Although forums are useful, they can be very misleading; there are more than a few recent threads about problems affecting products no longer made, but if you read the thread, it would get the impression that the latest revision was affected.
