There are 3 fans on my iMac (20 inch mid 2007), one for cpu and gpu, one for hdd and one for the disc drive. The hdd fan is a little bit noisy and I was wondering if it's safe to just unplug the cable or something else to completely disable the fan? Or does it cool other parts of the system too?

EDIT: I ended up unplugging the HDD fan. Everything is fine, PSU is slightly warmer but temps are still safe enough.

I like to turn it down to a safe level without hearing it. (Macs fan control) I usually set it on a constant value of about 1200RPM. On a 2007, the HDD fan probably doesn't do anything but the HDD, but extra cooling is always safe.

That's the problem, every single fan is running at bare minimum speed now and HDD fan still makes this weird hissing noise. While I think cleaning the fan would probably fix the issue, it would take a complete logic board disassembly to do it since HDD fan is hidden deep under everything.

Hmm, I would leave it. Plus, I wonder if you did turn it off, it you would get hardware errors, or beeps, due to the system board not finding the fan...
