is it safe to put iMac to sleep?

is it safe to press the powerbutton instantly to put the iMac to sleep mode? i ask because i when i put it in sleep mode, i can hear a loud mettalic sound coming of the HD when i urn it off!

Yes: that's probably just the hard drive heads parking.

I never turn my iMac off, it always goes in sleep mode. I do it slightly different, APPLE+ALT+EJECT but the end result is the same. No problems after 4 years.
