Is it true that iPhone 4S's CPU actually runs on 800Mhz, not on 1Ghz???

I've just read an article saying that.

Using some of the integer and fp tests of published Geekbench scores we can already conclude that Apple is shipping a lower clocked A5 in the iPhone 4S than it does in the iPad 2. This naturally makes sense as the iPhone 4S has a much smaller 5.25 Whr battery. Based on the Geekbench results it looks like the iPad 2 is clocked around 25% higher than the iPhone 4S, pegging the latter's clock speed at 800MHz

Why the question op?

The iPhone 4 was clocked at 800 the iPad 1 was 1ghz
The iPhone 4s is clocked at 800 and the iPad 2 is clocked at 1ghz but the big difference is the a5 chip is dual core!

true. if it was one 1ghz it would drain battery faster. The reason iPad has a 1ghz processor is because it has a big battery

I know Apple is quilte qood at the optimization of SW onto it's device,
but considering the other device equipped with CPU cloked over 1.2 or 1.4 Ghz, clocking 4S at 800Mhz makes it looks behind other vendor in H/W.

Which is ironic, considering it's 80% faster at graphics things than the S2 and a lot faster at other benchmarks as well (which can be more than 80% more, too)

I expect that the better graphic performance is due to the better graphics card, rather than raw CPU speed, only.

@OP: The iPhone 4s is plenty fast enough at 800Mhz. Don't worry about playing the Mhz game ; Higher Mhz != better performance. Its all about the chip design.. The GPU is also good, otherwise you wouldn't have games such as Infinity Blade.

I can understand your argument, but clock speed doesn't have as much to do with performance as potential for performance. Keep in mind that it is pushing less pixels to the screen as well. As an owner of both an iPhone 4s and a high end samsung android phone, I can tell you that because iOS on the iPhone deals with so much less legacy code and is optimized for many less hardware configurations it is much faster.

It's also important to realize that many high end phones feel faster because they utilize animations effectively to trick your brain.

So glad they under-clocked it, considering all the folks bitching about less than desirable battery life.

Maybe thats why some are complaining about the battery life. Their iPhones never got under-clocked.

Apple always under-clocks the processors in their mobile devices. I'm sure a 1 GHz A5 could be clocked higher. Apple chooses to give its iToys better battery life in exchange for less impressive specs. Of course, those awesome specs you see on some Android phones don't mean ****. The OS is still slow and clumsy. iOS is optimized for the hardware it runs on. Android is not.

I have an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4S and I really can't tell a difference in speed for what I do. I suppose if I loaded the same apps at the same time I might see a difference of a few milliseconds. But this isn't something worth complaining about.

If specs on paper are what you're after, then go buy an Android / Goofle spy-phone.

The graph I posted didn't have something to do with S/W like OS, but with H/W feature.
The GLbenchmark tool is meant to mainly test a perfomance on GPU.
Then CPU matters in those benchmark score if GPU are the same.
You are the one who think twice before just let out what your brain thinks.

Actually the graph i posted here is more close to measure the performance of GPU. GLBenchmark is right tool for GPU comparsion, actually as you know.
