i was going to buy the 32gb wifi and sell it when the 3G comes out, however the sale person told me there is no charge if I upgrade to the 3G with a bigger harddrive. So i went with the 16gb so i can upgrade to the 32gb with 3g later.

Did u guys hear this?

No, that is very, very false.

Sounds like a salesman made something up to make a sale. This is yet another reason that i really like the fact that apple employees don't make commission. Makes me trust them a lot more.

I am pretty sure the original poster meant "no additional charge" - ie you return the non-3g iPad for full credit applied toward a new iPad of equal or greater value.

What's Apple's return policy?

If you have 30 days to return an item for refund, then the answer to the original poster's question is "yes."

He returns the iPad he bought, gets refunded, buys a different one.

Assuming he meant what I think he meant, and doesn't believe he can exchange a cheaper iPad for a more expensive one without paying the difference ...

he actually went and comfirmed with another sales rep. I just need to pay the difference of it he said. he said since i got a 16gb, i just need to get a 32gb 3g.

I was about to say the salesperson fooled you into making the purchase today so he can get his commision. BUT upon reading your post more carefully it seems like you were going to make a purchase anyway and a more expensive one at that  so I think this salesperson was just genuinely misinformed.

LOL! RIght! and I have a bridge I'd LOVE to sell you!

For eligible Mac, iPod, and third-party products, you have up to 14 calendar days from the time you receive your item(s) to initiate a return.

I don't know the precise date the 3g will be in the Apple Store. The Apple site says it'll ship in "late April." It also says the wifi-only model will ship on April 12. 12 + 14 = 26, or approx April 26 for ship dates, which is comfortably late April. The wifi model reached the Apple Store on April 3, which is 9 days earlier than the touted ship date. If the 3g iPad reaches the Apple Store by 9 days earlier than the artificially calculated April 26 - or, April 17 - he should be able to make the exchange as the salesperson described.

Unless that particular store has a 'special' offer that is 'too good to be true', then unfortunately you have been scammed.
It is possible that they are including it in the 14 day return period, but a store encouraging returns ???? it sounds fishy.

I'd suggest you contact the store and speak to the manager and explain what was said and what you have bought and ask how the store would like to remedy the situation if you were indeed miss sold.

No-one here can offer you a better solution. So first thing, get in touch with the store.

That is what I figured he was talking about, the return policy.

Ummm, the Wifi version did not get to the store 9 days earlier than the ship date. The LAUNCH date was 4/3, the 4/12 date was because they ran out of the first run and had to push back the date for the SECOND batch. There is no reason to think the 3G version will appear 9 days earlier than some plucked out of the air date.

No sarcasm...but what store? Only Apple and Best Buy carry them.

Unless he was telling you to bring it back for your refund and buy the 3g..which is not 'illegal' but kind-of violates the intention of the return policy. Not only that but even if they <wink-wink> condone that you'd still have to pay the extra $$ for the better model.

free upgrade

I think what the sales guy meant is this, At best buy there is a restocking fee of either 10-15% I forget which it is, They will wave the restocking fee if you exchange the item or upgrade it to something better. So if he bought a Ipad now then in 2 weeks the new 3G model comes out they would take back the one he just bought for no fee as long as he gets the upgraded model. He will have to pay the difference in price and tax only.

no you are wrong

you have 14 days and need to pay a restocking fee.

I wish tis "pie in the sky" miss information was true while I'm suffering waiting on the 3G.

A Best Buy salesman also told my mother in law today that if she wanted to use the iPad as an eBook reader she should upgrade to the 32gb model so she could sotre more than a few books.

I just called apple stonestown and they said yes. If i bought it there, i can bring it back when the 3G comes out. All i neednis to get a bigger sz one which is the 32gb and pay the difference. However i can only do that at the same store where i purchased the current iPad that i am using.

For those of you who won't or didn't believe me, you can call them at 415-242-7890.
