Is it true that you can't jailbrake the new 3gs? Something like you can only do tethered jailbrake?

It depends on the bootrom of the 3GS. I have one that is an untethered jailbreak as I bought it when the 3GS just came out, and I have another that is a tethered jailbreak as it came out with the newer bootrom.
If you're buying one now chances are you're going to have to go with a tethered.

Well I just said. A brand new iPhone 3gs

I heard there was a new version of the 3gs out and the Jailbreak team was working on getting the code out....that was like 4 or 5 months ago. I haven't follow up since then.
The 3gs I bought for my sister 2 months ago, I had no problems jailbreaking it

OP-

Don't be a jerk, especially when the answer to your question was answered, even though it's been answered on here multiple times. All you had to do was a little searching.

i bought a 3Gs last monday

and i tried to jailbreak, but it didnt work

i totally did not know about this tethered jailbreaking stuff

since i came from a 3G and everything seemed fine when i was messing with the phone

Same here this is all news to me. So the new 3gs cannot be jailbroken and no one is even talking about it. Seems like a pretty big deal to me but I guess not

It can be jailbroken.

Its called a Tethered Jailbreak. There is a very good thread on here along with about 4 other topics like this on page 1 of the iPhone Hacks section

Everybody who attempts in the slightest to keep up with jailbreaking knows about it.

Obviously you don't attempt to keep up with jailbreaking.

If you Google tethered jailbreak you will find hundreds of hits on this.

Apparently you did zero research before getting your new 3GS.

Same reason you didn't read any other threads posted here before starting this one.

its pretty obvious if you keep up with jailbreaking that you would know

but the average user isnt going to keep up with jailbreaking news, at most they will just check if their firmware and baseband is compatible with jailbreaking, they are going to check their serial number to see if they are jailbreakable because it wasnt an issue before (or not that i know of)

Mines is a week 39 3GS and jailbroken untethered. Maybe you can ask the sales person at ATT to give you the same week or lower.

yes you can certainly jailBREAK a new 3GS. its just tethered like others have stated. so either dont let your iPhone battery die (i suggest investing in an external battery pack like the Morphie Juicepak) or you will have to run Blackra1n again if you let the phone die or have to reboot.

Good luck getting a week 37 or lower (37+ is flaky, depends on the factory)- that was way back in October. ATT and Apple probably all have week 50+ phones now.

@OP seriously? 1 minute of searching could have answered this question. Then you just get rude- 'well i just said'. People are helping you and.... wtf man.

Because once you jailbreak, a lot of people never look back. I jailbroke 2.2.1? That was like Jan or Feb of '09. I didn't think about having to do the whole thing till the 3.0 OS came out. Yeah. 4-5 months is a long time. You gotta refresh your memory and then do a bunch of research. each time a new OS comes out you gotta do the whole cycle over.

So not everyone wants to go through that, and not everyone keeps up to date with every little detail.

I think a simple explanation that WEEK ## and later or whatever Bootrom and up will require a tethered JB is fine.

Agreed, but if you get a new model phone, why would you attempt to JB it without at least searching out the basic info on what tools to use and what steps to complete to successfully do the JB.

Anything less and I say a person is foolish and they indeed make themselves look very foolish posting a question for which the answer is so very prominantly contained in just about every other thread here and just about every other iPhone site on the Internet.

Kinda reminds me of the old adage...Read the *** manual.

No one is talking about it because people has been talking about it a while before. Don't act like a smart-ass when someone already answered your question. If you don't know what tether JB is then you should of just google it rather than being a smart-ass. It is not our responsibility to keep you updated.
