So im running on the 1st gen Iphone 2g.. and I'm starting to get annoyed from the sluggish performance and the lack of 3G speeds. So my Upgrade eligibility opened up this month and I was wondering if its worth upgrading to the 3gs for 199 or just waiting for the 4g iphone.. Do you guys think there will be a big difference in them that would be worth waiting for? Or will I get the necesities through the new iphone software? Sorry but I know its all speculation since all the information out right now are rumors.

Thanks for the help...

(I'm asking for opinions btw)

When I upgraded from my EDGE iPhone to the 3G, I was amazed at how much faster it was; it was definitely worth the upgrade.

HOWEVER, if you can wait for the 4th gen to be announced and see if it appeals to you, wait for it. With all the rumors and speculation, this iPhone is shaping up to be worth the wait

hmm yeah I am pretty darn "itchy" for the upgrade lol.. Im restraining myself from driving over to the ATT store right now but I mind as well wait for atleast some sort of announcment :(

you will be waiting

till the end of June WWDC conference before any news on the next gen Iphone

If you are that itchy now, I would go ahead and pull the trigger
Now way you will wait till the end of Summer
Might as well start enjoying a new phone now

is it likely that the new iphone will still be available in white? or is it expected to be a redesign?

I ask as I will probably be picking up an iphone in the summer, and would rather a white one than anything else

I would say white would be available
I can't imagine why it wouldn't be

Thanks for the opinions :) I might just go for it then... I'm just hoping the new OS 4.0 that would come out would be compatible with the 3GS.. if thats the case I wouldn't feel bad at all upgrading now even though a new phone is coming out soon.

I hope it is too
At this point, we just don't know

At this point it's a 50/50 shot. I would wait since almost last week of Feb and Apple announces annually their next iPhone OS feature set in early March. But if you really need an iPhone, go for it.

The only thing holding me back from buying the 3GS right now is wondering if its hardware will support OS4. You think they will confirm that when they announce the new OS next month?

I would say "yes", when they announce the new OS, they should give the compatibility information

Sluggish performance? That's why I'm running 2.2.1. There's no sluggish performance. That sluggishness came with 3.0.

The 3Gs has a powerful enough processor and enough RAM to handle OS 4.0 when it comes out. The 3Gs has a lot of extra RAM to spare. I know this because if you jailbreak it and run SBSettings, it'll show you how much RAM is left. The Nexus One can run an app called Advanced Task Killer Free that'll show unused RAM and often times it hovers around 110mb when everything is closed out. A 3Gs with nothing running is around 140mb from my hands-on experience.

Basically what I'm trying to get at is that I personally believe the 3Gs is going to be able to run any new OS that comes out in the next two years for the iPhone. The rumored 4G iPhone sounds like it is going to be more about other add-ons such as a nicer camera, a possible boost in the processor, and maybe some cosmetic changes. I really don't think it's going to be as revolutionary as everybody talks about on this forum. If you want evidence of an overhyped product, check out the iPad.

So did the usefulness... OS 3 might be slightly slower than 2.21 but so many of the best apps require OS 3 that it is just a no-brainer. I wonder, which apps and which versions you use that are OK with 2.21.

I'm serious. It's too late for me now to revert back, but I want to know. I'm the kind of guy who considers going back to Tiger from Snow Leopard... :)

I'm only running 1 third party app and not because I "have to". You see... my situation is kind of unique. I use my iPhone basically as a texting device and an iPod. I am not under contract and I'm using a go-phone SIM in it right now. I have data blocked so MMS wouldn't work for me anyway, I don't do web browsing, twitter got old, push notifications wouldn't work and I don't like playing games on it.

So, in conclusion, I had one basic choice... have an OS that runs like a dog or enjoy an OS that is missing copy and paste. Then I counted the times I actually *needed* copy and paste in my situation and I could count the times on one hand. So I chose the faster/smoother OS.

By the way... I just got a PS3 for gaming. I'm loving it!

Its a personal preference then... I dunno if you ask me I'd want to get every dollars worth out of this expensive device.. If i wanted something to just play music, make calls, and txt id go get a free messaging device from ATT.. just throwing my 2 cents out there :)

my 2g worked fine on 3.0  to the OP I am going to kind of play both sides of this.

#1 you will notice a HUGE increase from 2g to 3GS. I went from 2g to 3GS I skipped the 3g cause I pretty much boycotted ATT for as long as possible (had the 2g on tmo) but when the 3gs came out I said what the hell and ported over and really couldnt believe how much faster it was. maybe its the increase in processor AND addition of 3g but its like night and day.

#2 if I were you I would definately wait for the 4th gen. Right now is a terrible time to buy cause their going to announce this phone in the next coming months and your going to be locked in for 2 years. If you wait youll be able to get the 4th gen right out of the gate with full subsidy. I think that in itself is worth it cause people with 3GS' are going to have to go thru the huge hassle of selling their 3GS' and buying the 4th gen at full price if the 4th gen really does turn out to be amazing. if you really need something now Id look for a cheap 8gb 3g on ebay to hold you over.

yeah thats what Ive been debating on, but It shouldnt be a problem with me because I have 6 lines on my account and 2 of them are up for upgrade and in 2011 2 more of them will come up for upgrade... So i think ill be fine there.
