With the new operating system and SDK it seems like a lot of the restrictions have been lifted. While there are obviously still a lot of restrictions on developers, is it ultimately worth it? You void your warranty which I hear you can avoid by just formatting it or something through iTunes. Then you run the risk of bugs and problems to the device since its being run in a way apple didnt intend. I jailbroke my first iPod touch a long long time ago and having installer (now cydia) at the time was nice but now you have an endless number of apps in the app store. Ive been looking around and there really isnt a lot of info on whether or not its worth jailbreaking the 3GS, just the 3G which with the 2.0 operating system I would understand why you would want to jailbreak it. But now it seems like the main reasons are for more customization options, running background apps and free unapproved apps. This doesnt mean you can actually run any of the apps you get from the app store in the background, just the ones that have that feature from cydia (at least that is my understanding). So what are your thoughts?

no. u will have a tethered jailbreak. hopefully geohot or the dev-team has found another 24kpwn exploit, and is saving it for after 3.1.3 update.
Quite an assumption there. The tethered jailbreak only effects some 3GS's made week 38-41/42, and nearly all after that. So please try giving valid information.
So OP, do you know when your iPhone was made? If you don't know, look at the serial number found via iTunes (with your iPhone connected) or on the original phone box.
The week made is the 4th and 5th numbers in the serial number.
Nobody can answer that question for you - it all depends on what you want or need from your phone. For me, I want to be able to run multiple applications and I need to tether - hence I have to jailbreak. The 3gs is a better candidate than ever for this because it has enough RAM that multi-tasking (especially with ProSwitcher) is almost native.

has said over and over on twitter and I believe his blog he has no plans to work on the tether issue. he said he is sick of getting blamed for the wifi issues. I'm not even sure he is going to bother with 3.1.3. as far as the Dev team well they don't talk as much!

Define worth it? I have been jailbroken since the original iPhone and am now jailbroken on a 3GS with 3.1.2. It has never been an issue, and has only gotten better over time. Backgrounder is awesome, status notifier, themes (although some are pure junk), etc etc... The worst that will happen is you don't like it (Doubt it! ) and you just do a restore and boom! All is back to factory defaults!
