I just bought a new iPad Pro 12.9 2018 and it came with iOS 12.3.1 on it. Is it worth installing iPadOS on it? Is there decreased battery life which is my main concern?

Depends on your usage. I am personally not very happy with iPadOS. There are some quite annoying bugs for me:

1. I am asked to enter my AppleID password every day
2. I cannot make Mail app work. There are issues with mails fetching
3. Automated Shortcuts does not work properly (like you see the notification but they do not get run unless you force them manually; sometimes they do not even run at all)
4. OneDrive issues -> sync does not work properly.
5. Files app is a bit of a mess in general or at least when working with OneDrive
6. Sometimes I have issues with syncing Reminders over two Apple IDs

I can exclude the Shortcuts bug as this is a new feature anyway. The rest are however regression bugs that impact my daily usage.

If you do not use those apps or functionalities you would not have any issues. Or let's say you won't be bothered by those issues. I cannot comment on others.

I personally would suggest you to go to the iOS forum and read the current open bugs and decide for yourself if those are affecting you or not.

100x yes. Battery life seems better to me than it did on iOS 12.

really? When leaving my iPad Pro 2018 on for the night I see about a 10% decrease in battery power on iPadOS 13.1. Please note I don't have Hey Siri turned on neither have I turned on App background refreshing.
iOS 12 did not run my battery empty while doing nothing.

Is your iPad cellular? Mine is WIFI and I have no such issues on it.

I do notice this on my iPhone though. It does tend to lose more battery during the night than with iOS 12. Now it loses like 5-6 % which IMO is a bit too much. Mobile data is off and Siri is not activated either. I don't know what is doing to lose 5 % battery during the night.

Wifi. that's weird that yours does not have these problems. Do you think it's worth bringing it to the Apple store?

I will check tonight as well and let you know if I see any issues. So far I have noticed but it could be because I do not use my iPad in the evening. I use it mostly at work so maybe I forget the battery level I had left at it and this is why I don't notice the battery drain in the morning.

@Hessel89 So as I promised I checked my iPad this morning. Basically I left the iPad last night around 8:30 PM at 63 % battery level and it is now 60 % around 6:55 AM in the morning. Overall not bad at all. It seems that it had lost only 3 % over night. Maybe it could get more if I had slept till late but I usually wake up around this time.

Thanks for the follow up! Although yours does appear to drain slightly slower, they're both being drained overnight so I'm guessing iOS13 is still running inefficient processes in the background..

Absolutely worth it. I’ve had PadOS on my 2018 12.9 since public beta 2. All the bugs I experienced during the betas were expected and have been addressed. All of our iPad pros are running PadOS and none of our team is reporting an issues. Ive been a heavy iPad user since gen 1 and this is by far my favorite OS to date.

You May want to take yours in to Apple. I don’t lose even close to 10% and I have everything searching all the time. Even my iPad looks for new emails every 15 minutes. I keep everything updating in the background and the Apple Pencil charging. I haven’t noticed any majorly battery drain issues since somewhere around public beta 3 or maybe 4.
