I have a mid-2020 27-inch iMac that's running the latest update for Catalina.

Is it worth upgrading to Big Sur at this point?

I never have gone forward with the update over concerns it won't run as well on my Intel iMac as Catalina. Those concerns will be heightened with Monterey. I'm also not eager to lose over 30 GB of HD space, even though my 512 GB SSD has about 468 GB free.

Catalina is giving me no problems, but at the same time, I don't want to fall too behind either. I mainly use my iMac for browsing, email, streaming, Office-type tasks, etc.

I haven't used any of the betas, but I'm guessing that Monterey is a tock release to Big Sur. I really disliked Catalina and have had pretty decent luck with Big Sur. Maybe give it a few .x releases and give it a go. You can always backup Cat and clone it back if you dont like it.

Big Sur ran fine on my Intel based system. If you have a mid-2020 iMac then it is more than capable of running the latest macOS. Far more than capable. If you want to update to Big Sur or Monterey when it releases you can without worrying.

You don't permanently lose the storage space used by installing updates to macOS either.

I've found Big Sur to work a lot better than Catalina, more stable and generally more reassuring! Catalina was flaky in comparison. So do the update, I can't imagine there being anything not to like. It's probably the best time to do the update to Big Sur now that it has had a few iterations;)
