Is it worth upgrading to iOS 5 or are battery drain issues to significant?

Hi there

I have an iPod Touch 4th generation 8GB model and I'm currently running iOS 4.3.5.

Would I be unwise to upgrade to iOS 5.0.1, given what I keep reading about battery life issues on the web? Should I wait until Apple fix the battery issues? Or is it simply the case that a significant minority have the issue and I probably won't have a problem if I upgraded. Clearly those with problems will be more vocal.

I know people at work have had issues with their iPhone 4S but that might be a bug only related to iPhones and 3G.

While there does seem to be an element of randomness or "luck" involved, if I were to go just by my own experience, I believe you are more likely to see the battery life increase than decrease.

this is more like an iPhone 4S issue than an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4

some people have had problems with their i4's and ipod touches even iPads but most of the times restores or hard resets fixes them... not with the 4S

on the other hand I have terrific battery life with an iPhone 4S go figure...

Battery life is just as good, if not better, on iOS5 with both my iPhone4 and iPad2. AND, there are all kinds of benefits for upgrading your OS - lots of improvements and new capabilities. Check out some of the threads on that. Well worth doing.

Thanks for all your replies. That's enough to convince me to upgrade. When you here so many negative comments and you don't want the hassle of downgrading, it does put one off.

I'm also going to upgrade to Lion, as the feature I require for iOS5 to work, doesn't work in Snow Leopard. This being iCloud. I will have to repurchase Inspiration [mind mapping software] or just use it in Windows 7, which I run virtually in VMWare Fusion 4.

Hopefully Lion won't react to only have 4GB when I'm also running Windows 7 in VMWare Fusion 4. I think it may do but it might encourage me to buy more memory for my laptop.

I think some of my memory problems are due to Safari leaking memory. Even the latest version does this. It use to be better but now it seem to behave like Firefox did, eat up my memory over time and the time isn't that long either. I often have to close it down and reopen it to get back my lost space.

I'd just stay at 4.3.5, it's still pretty amazing and I don't think it's worth the risk to upgrade.

Go for it, I think 5.0 is awesome and just so many new things.

I honestly didn't think anyone would stay on 4.3.5 over iOS 5. There is absolutely no benefit to staying on 4.X anymore even from the jailbreaking/unlocking crowd. And in some circumstances you will actually see improved performance as evident with safari tests.

I think the battery drain concerns were early on. Upgrade and enjoy ios5

For what it's worth, I only had terrible battery performance on my iPhone 4 when I jailbroke 5.01 (semi-tethered). This resolved itself when I restored to stock.

In any case, if you want to use iCloud you need to be running iOS 5, so you might as well just make the jump.

For my iPhone 3GS upgrade from 4.1 to 5.0.1 has been a pretty positive one. Overall performance has improved. Everything is quite snappy.

my battery was draining WAY too fast when i updated to 5.0. However, after the most recent update and turning off bluetooth, wifi when not in use, push notifications, etc, my battery has been lasting ALOT longer..I went to 2 hours stand by time to 7 hours

I will say this. My MacBoois struggling to run Windows 7 with only 4GB. It struggled At times previously, mostly when Safari was also open but now I don't even need Safari on. This suggests to me that Lion requires more RAM to operate.


Also I think iOS 5 might be slightly slower and less responsive.

On top of that I find I need to have my iPod pluged in and iTunes open if I wish to sync to iCal. I can set up manual syncing but that then forces me to manually sync videos and music. I want to be able to manually sync everything expect music and videos. Not possible I believe. I was kind of hoping thatajust by opening iCal it would check my iPod ICal and sync the 2 but it doesn't. So much for auto syncing of my calendars.

Wonder if Apple will eve eventually make the whole operating system iTunes but much more advanced than it currently is.

WTF?

Use iCloud to sync your calendar across all devices. But first you have to upgrade to ios 5. Remember, it's rare you hear good things and experiences on a forum. So don't judge iOS 5 performance on forums. iTunes Match + iCloud + iOS 5 = all of your problems solved.

And why are you running windows 7 on a MacBook anyway? I have a 3 year old iMac with 4Gb of RAM running the Adobe Suite 5 and Lion and have no issues at all.
