Upgrade if Monterey does something you want your new iMac to do that Big Sur does not. Do a search to compare the two and see if there are some features you must have.

If you want to retain a way to fall back should you not like it, consider installing Monterey on an external drive and boot with that one. That way you can try it while retaining an easy way back.

I didn’t have any issues with it on my M1 iMac. I can’t say it had any features that made it worth it. Maybe the feature to pull text from a photograph because that was pretty cool. Nothing broke and I always try to keep the latest updates just for security.

This is copied directly from my post in this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-on-m1-mba-got-4-m1-mbas-in-the-home.2350182/

There are two issues I have with Monterey.

1. when I unplug my external monitor (an old Cinema Display I got for free, but that's another story...), I regularly have to run killall Dock for it to recognize that the monitor is disconnected.
2. (more of an annoyance than an issue) - in the Displays section of Control Center, if you click on the top like you'd normally do to exit, it doesn't work - have to click the actual icon.

Otherwise, Monterey is perfectly stable and should work flawlessly. I use it in production (writing out lead sheets, composing film scores, editing video, etc.) and it works just fine, with the exception of the two issues above.
