Is it worth upgrading to Take 2?

I've just bought a shiny new 160gb :apple:TV from an Apple store today and I noticed that it is the old version.

I've read a few threads on here all highlighting issues since upgrading such as sluggish response or no longer easy to browse your own media (in other words more geared towards buying/renting from iTunes).

As I'm in the UK, the ability to easily browse and watch my own ripped shows, movies, etc is more important to me than buying the limited content on the UK iTunes store.

Should I upgrade? Is there any real reason not to?

I have no real experience regarding the new software but I just wanted to mention that you can rent HD movies if you get a US iTunes account and US vouchers from ebay.

IIRC, if you upgrade to Take 2 and don't like it, you can press the magic keys on your Apple Remote (for system recovery) and make it downgrade back to whatever came preinstalled on your AppleTV when you bought it.
 
I think there's nothing sluggish about Take 2, though due to way they have reorganized the way we deal with media, it feels different. We don't have to wait for the entire library to get sent from our computers to our :apple:TVs anymore, so that's faster, but when we're scrolling through remote media, it takes a bit longer. It's all a trade off.

The advantage of having 5.2 sound far outweighs any negative the upgrade might cause. It is, however, clearly oriented to the iTunes Music Store at the top-level menu.

Doesn't bother me, and I haven't rented anything yet. It remembers your last selection, so getting back to "MyMovies" is a single click. The convenience of not having to switch back and forth between :apple:TV and Streaming sources is a great improvement IMO, too.

And you should look into getting an American iTunes Gift Card... ;)
 
Be aware...

According to your usage, do not upgrade. If you don't need any of the new features, don't upgrade until you must. Take a look at the message boards at Apple.com. A lot of people have a lot of issues.

I'm still trying to put things right after my upgrade/downgrade one week ago. And I'm still unable to sync correctly.
 
I upgraded to 2.0 to see what it was all about.

Then my Apple TV died - it was only 23 days old.

I took it in for repair and they just returned it and sold me a new one.

The new one is here and running 1.1 just fine.

I do not miss any 2.0 features and for now see no reason to upgrade.


There you go, I went from 1.1 to 2.0 and now back on 1.1.

For the record - I do not believe the failure of my Apple TV was related to the 2.0 upgrade, however I will keep an open mind and 1.1 on my Apple TV! :D
 
I haven't had any problems at all since upgrading to Take 2. No 'sluggishness' or or other network difficulties of any kind. Not only that, but in my opinion you only gain with the upgrade. No features/functions are lost, and you get a bunch of new ones. Switching 'sources', between my :apple:TV's 40Gb HD and either of my computers (for streaming), used to be a nuisance as it took a while for the :apple:TV to load the library index, but now that transition is much more streamlined.

The menu choices are rearranged, so I can see how some people may not like it because it's not what they're accustomed to, but if they'd had this (the Take 2 structure) from the beginning I think there'd be less complaining.
 
Yes, upgrade. Have had no problems, and even though I too am in the UK and am missing out on the rentals, there are still plenty that you can purchase if you want. But I love the podcast feature. Upgrade, it won't do any harm and you can always restore back if you don't like it.
 
Anyone who stays on the old version is strange, IMHO. Rewind and fast forward was painful if not impossible to use with the old version. On the new version, it's as good as a DVD player or DVR.
 
Okay, I've taken the plunge and upgraded. Everything seems fine so far. Hope it stays that way!

Somebody on another thread said something like it was practically useless outside the UK because it was so geared towards renting and purchasing content since the upgrade. It had me worried but, hey, I've done it now and no regrets! :)
 
IMHO the only downside I have seen to upgrading is that I really like the icon on the left list on the right main menu to 1.x and am not as happy using the 2.0 menu. I think it could have been done better. But there are many other factors that made the upgrade very much worth it.
