or could the iphone come out earlier? I didn't find much info on this in macrumors/forums/apple websites. One thing I'm wondering is: if they don't put anything on the market for 5 more months, doesn't this mean that other companies (blackberry, palm, etc.) have plenty of time to put something on the market which has the same functionality or even more gimmicks than the iphone? Now everyone knows what it'll be able to do so mimicking shouldn't be a problem.

Hi
Steve Jobs explicitly said June but it's always possible it could come out as early as March but doubtful.

As far as competition, this topic has had many discussions and some say it could be a big problem for Apple and some say that nobody will be able to offer anything quite the same, even in six months.

Apple has to wait for the FCC then they have to get the marketing ready so its going to be a while.

People seem to keep forgetting that Apple isn't the only company that needs to go through FCC certification. Any of the other phone makers who rush a device through R&D to try to compete with the iPhone will eventually have to submit it for certification as well. I would say they would need at least til years end before they could bring a reactionary product to market.

Yep, and the competition won't get their hands on an iPhone until Apple ships them. So it's gonna be a looong time till there's something similar from another company - if there's another company who can do something as good, I don't think there is to be honest because if there were it would've been done by now.

I could easily see the iPhone being released in May at the earliest. It should be approved by March and I'm sure that they've already begun the marketing part of the process, so we'll see what Apple does...

It should come in June. Because 6 months later (Q1 2008) a 3G version will be unveiled for Europe and Asia. If not then I can't see how Steve Job will reach the 1% market share by 2008...
