Is LogMeIn the only choice for Remote Control from my iPhone when I don't know the IP of my home PC?

It appears that gotomypc does not yet work on the iPhone and all the other options are VNC.

The downside of the VNC's are that you need to know the IP of your PC which I don't always know, and that you have to open up some ports on your router, which I'm not in a position to do.

Are there any other options?

All I will say is the LogMeIn Iginition app works great. I know it's $30, but for me it's well worth it. I have over 150 PC's in mine and it comes in handy everyday!
Just need to install the LogMeIn app on your iPhone and the computer (Host)software matched to your account.

I am sure there are other options out there but I had already been using logmein for quite some time so it was a no-brainer for me. well worth $30! :D

There are remote desktop apps. But they would all require either a VPN or port forwarding.

Logmein is more than worth the $30 since I use it every day. My favorite feature is that I can have my laptop either at work or at somebody's house, and I am still able to access it without having to worry about IP addresses and forwarding!

Remote Desktop is the way to go. Server piece comes with windows, uses integrated security, and is free. I think the app I'm using costs $20.

Just saw another new one pop up in the App Store yesterday, i'll see if its still on the main page...

Yup, its called 'Wyse PocketCloud'

That being said, I have no idea how good/bad it is. And its 20.00

I like LogMeIn. Simple. Secure. Works well. Easy to use. Don't need to worry about IP addresses or port issues.

Best $30 I've spent in a while.

If you have Windows XP Pro or higher or Vista Business or higher than use the RDP apps and port forward and use a DynDNS service.

I recommend the use of iTaps RDP Client. It's the only one that actually works and is tested.

Otherwise, LogMeIn is your best choice.

So is LogMeIn simple as can be? As long as the adequate software is installed, and the computer is on?

Also, what's up with in the App Store Description of LogMeIn? It mentions a small annual fee or something, what's that about?

Suggest that you can go to the LogMeIn web site to see the description of their various products and costs. They do offer a free version which is very useful.

For each computer that you want to control (Mac, PC), you must install a small application. Then link to an e-mail address.

I use the free version to control about 20 computers.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I didn't want to start another thread when this was already here. Anyways, I installed the logmein app and installed it on 4 different computers. This app works like a charm, especially if you are in a bind and don't have your laptop with you. I also have winadmin and logmein beats winadmin hands down.

Team Viewer. Its Free. You dont need to know any IP address. Controls over WiFi or 3G. Works GREAT. You can also get Team Viewer HD for iPad. Also free,

Yup, I have been using TeamViewer for years in PC and since IP4 a month now.

It is free and no static IP needed.

When I'm home, I will use Mocha VNC Lite via wifi connection and when I'm not home I will use TeamViewer.

Just discovered TeamViewer thanks to this thread. What a great app, does everything that LogMeIn does except for free. I appreciate the recommendation.

Thank you so much! I didn't know such a free app exists, thanks again!

So does my computer at home need to be on all the time for this to work? Or can I somehow turn on my computer from this app? I'm confused on how this works.

Yes your computer needs to be on and have Team Viewer for PC installed on it.

Used Teamviewer for a bit and I did not like it at all. It was pretty slow and lagged but for free, you certainly beat its functionality. Had it on my ipad.

You might also try Here, File File! which features an iPhone app with an elegant interface that displays your computer's actual wallpaper screen. I use it because it's relatively inexpensive ($9.99) and was created specifically for the Mac. I'm by no means an HFF power-user, but it has saved me a few times, and since it can stream the 50 GB of media in my iTunes, it effectively increases my iPhone capacity by almost 200%.

(Note: Pardon my not paying sufficient attention, but I just realized: I don't think HFF has PC capabilities yet.)

Jump Desktop is real nice and it has a 4 star rating at the moment. It's RDP and VNC too.

Ok, been using TeamViewer for a few days and wanted to mention a couple things I've noticed. First, I want to preface this by stating that I am very pleased overall with it. Especially since it is free.

One downside is that you cannot stream audio or video from your host. I didn't know this was a limitation until I tried it. Logmein claims you can play video games remotely so I'm sure you can stream as well.

Another thing is, I am on a very fast wifi connection and it seems to be very laggy. Not unusable by any means but kind of limiting.

I know it's free but maybe I will look into spending the money for logmein if it does in fact stream and is substantially faster
