..."Despite some minor flaws, this MacBook is a great choice for someone who wants a laptop..."

Cons: ..Rough case edge; weak speakers..

Does the notebook really have rough case edges? Is it really something that stands out?

Are the speakers worse than the iBook G4?

yes and yes

sharpe on the edge on the sides and the speakers are not up to much - but then again why should they be ? it's a laptop not a iPod

still pleased as punch with my BlackBook

:)

I've not had any problem with "rough edges" on my Macbook, but I also don't rest my wrists on the machine.

The speakers are plenty loud enough in a quiet room. In a coffee shop, they are not loud. I figure if you need it to be loud, plug it into headphones or a stereo -- it's not meant to be a "boombox", after all!

It is quite a rarity for any product to escape criticism over at least one or more features. It goes with the territory of what goes into reviewing items.

My MB does not have rough edges, and the speakers aren't bad at all. Way better than my last rev. iBooks speakers:) The iBook only has 2 speakers, the MB has three

Some people have reported having their wrists cut by the edge. *shrug*

I would definitely not say cut because it cant actually cut into you. The edges are "sharp" enough to create a discomfort if you rest your wrists on the edges of the laptop.

But MacWorld is definitely right about weak speakers though. Thankfully with the ear buds got with free iPod, I dont really mind too much :)

Well the iBook speakers were never that great and the MacBook is definitely a far better computer. The speakers are fine in that respect and I think they sound better than the iBook ones. But I have an iPod and external speakers anyway.

Sharp edges? I never noticed.

3 speakers?? Wheres the last one go? Wait im confused next you'll tell me theres a secret usb slot

I got used to the sharp edges. Not too bad.

I could do with better speakers. I don't notice that they're any better than in the iBook, though I could be wrong. They're fine for most purposes, but you're not going to be able to get boombox loud music out of your MacBook. It's easy enough though to buy some external speakers for less than $200 that will satisfy your needs to rock out.

As others have said- there's never going to be a perfect machine (at least at this price) and the MacBook is no exception. Still, it's a great quality laptop and I have no regrets.

BTW, no 'mooing' here, except for an occasional whirring that doesn't bother me in the least. My MacBook is quieter than my iBook and isn't noticeably hotter.

the third is a sub under the keyboard, and their are internal usb ports for the isight and bluetooth.

The speakers are a bit quiet compared to my old Vaio laptop. But they do sound good. Not nearly as tinny as your average laptop speakers sound.

Rough edges? I've had my Macbook for a couple of weeks now, and I've never noticed that one.

All in all, this Macbook is perfect for me. I've had no problems whatsoever.

From a plastics manufacturing standpoint, the sharp edges sound like something that could easily happen as a manufacturing defect / flaw... it's quite likely that they did exist at some point (assuming that MW reviewed a production model at all, and not a pre-pro) and the dies were modified to resolve the issue as a running change....

Yes it has sharp edges, and no, it won't affect safety or comfort whatsoever.

It's like me telling you that my MacBook is white --- simply a description, not a "con" at all. Oooh, it's white. "Uh oh!"

Ah, right. But that's probably worse than the MacBook speakers. A better comparison, liketom, would've been: "It's a laptop, not a hi-fi stereo system."

It's not a laptop, its a notebook:p
