Is mobile me worth it?

I currently have the 60 day trial of mobile me. I am using it to temporarily host a website (my domain) Once the trial is up, if i view all the other features as just bonuses to the web hosting, is it worth the extra cash than just paying web hosting to another company? Just looking for opinions.

I do use iWeb/MM for site hosting, despite its weaknesses but it serves its purpose ...

The biggest limitation for me is that the domain i use to host the MM site behind can't be used within MM to have email send out using that address .. bit daft really - would be killer feature if they ever went for it.

The email is nice and the iDisk feature is a nice backup for some smallish key files

I know you can get a raft of free solutions and hook together to get the mobileme experience but i do like the one-stop-shop approach.

I just wish that i could use my custom domain for email since i can host on a custom domain within MM.... that would seal the deal ....

I'm still considering moving my site and email to a hosted exchange so i can do this but thats still typically £6/month for that which is more than the price of MM alone...

i believe MobileMe is not worth it for my needs which are: email/calendar/contact solution + file storage solution + synchronization.

For under $10/year you will be able to get your own domain name and set it up for free on Google Apps to get yourmail@yourdomain.com. I was lucky enough to get my family name as my personal domain and created for the whole family email addresses like firstname@lastname.fr (I'm French)

For File storage and synchronisation nothing beats Dropbox which give you 2GB for free. Dropbox comes with a tiny client that works on Windows/Mac/Linux. Files and folders are automatically sync in real time (real push) and does file versioning, that is, it automatically backs up any change when a document is edited. Previous verion of a document stored online do not even count toward your quota. They also generate a public gallery for your photos.

does anyone know how much storage you get for the site? Is it how much you get for idisk?

It just comes out of your 20Gb total disk allocation for email/idisk/iweb etc

Also, they're not fully up and running with Push yet are they at google with iphone?

Before the launch of push notifications (apps) with 3.0 push email worked flawlessly with mobileme.

Now it's 50, 50% at best.

There are times I open mail.app and its empty. It then re downloads all my emails and then it works for awhile before the same thing happens. Other than that mail stops pushing and only works when I open the app which gets it going for awhile before it stops again.

I know it's not my phone or provider cause push notification for apps come in flawlessly.

Therefore it has to be mobileme.

I have exactly the same problem, open mail and nothings there. It's usually when I wake up in the morning it's empty and no mails are showing, yet when I open mail it gets a stack of unread emails. Some mornings it's okay others, not so.

I decided to go with bluehost for my web hosting. It is much cheaper per year and gives better options like custom email address. However, has anyone had luck with the people on ebay selling their family mobile me accounts with the 5gb of space. It is much cheaper (like 20 bucks) and would allow me to use all the features like back to my mac and the like. (I don't care about space)

It depends on whether you use the features given to you

I use iDisk often and already have a LOT of people connected to me through the email so it is worth it

But, I would say 90% of my friends would not use iDisk or any other feature besides the actual email so GMail is a much better option for them

I use Mobile Me, and it is worth the price if asked.. However - I use it in a different manner. The main use is to sync my iCal on my iMac with my wife's iPhone, and look at the mobile me site for the family's calendar.

I don't use it for the web hosting, but share photo's on my me.com website.

If there is a better (cheaper) way to sync all of my calendars without having to go to a website lemme know!

I really don't want to sound like one of *those* guys, but really - if you search, you'll find many threads on "Is MobileMe worth it".

Bottom line:

Some people do, some people don't. It depends on how you use it.

Other opinions really don't matter, only you can decide if its worth it for you. If you are only using it for web hosting, well, what would you pay elsewhere for web hosting over a year?

I'd say it's easily worth it, especially if you want to keep all those devices in sync.
