is MobileMe the only way to get a @mac.com mail address?

I'm a newbie in the Mac world as I got my MacBook Pro just a couple of weeks ago as an emergency device for editing, but as you may guess I've fallen for it completely now.
As per-subject, I was wondering if subscribing to MobileMe is the only way to get a @mac.com mail address. Do you guys know more about this?

Only if you were a .Mac user before the switch to .MobileMe

Those who purchased after the switch can only have .me

Hi, I too have both me.com and mac.com as I signed up before the change over. Does anyone know how long mac.com will remain as an address? Have apple indicated that it will for ever or will they expect everyone to move over within a period of time. Just curious.

I believe it may be a while if they ever decide to retire the @mac

I have both, but definitely find the @mac to be more powerful.

i tried that, but it is constantly asking me about the @me password wich i used t have for the trial.

this @mac adress is valid only thru mac messanger?

so the adress i just got @mac I can only use for iChat???
In a year an a half three hard disks chrushed, battery didn't work at the beginning, and when it is closed I can feel on the right side some air, empty space..
???
