Is MobileMe worth it if...

I will be getting iphone insurance through Worth Ave Group?

Ive had my iphone stolen recently and I dont really want to take the risk of getting it stolen again without having any insurance. Am I still able to get similar apps that mobileme has through jailbreaking it?
 
It depends if you want your email, contacts and calander synced accross different devices.

It also has the find my phone and some other features, including cloud storage.

The syncing can be done for free with Gmail, and cloud storage is also available free elsewhere.

I use MobileMe because it's mostly pain free and is integrated well with my MacBook and iPhone.

Is there an alternative for tracking iphones?f
 
Google can't sync bookmarks, AFAIK.

And no, there's no other way to track an iPhone or remote wipe it.
 
The value of MobileMe is better measure by all of the elements it provides, instead of one feature. To be honest, I question whether if the find my iphone is a worthwhile feature. If it helps the police find the phone, then yeah its worthwhile.
 
MobileMe is worth it if you can find one or two features that you really love. Pretty much everything it does can be replaced with free services, but if there's just 1 thing you really love better than the free services, it's worth it.

I pay for MobileMe for just 2 things:
* The online photo galleries (for me, no free one comes close)
* Its ability to sync keychains between computers (I never liked any of the 3rd party password programs)

Everything else is nice, but I'm happy with their free versions. For example, I use Dropbox even though I technically have an iDisk as part of my MobileMe account. And I use G-Mail instead of my Me Mail. So if you can find those 1 or 2 things you really love, go for it.

Otherwise, use IMAP G-Mail e-mail, G-Mail calendars, Boxcar, Dropbox, and Flickr (all free) and be happy.

Agreed.

For me, its my email account. I've had a .mac email account since apple called it iTools and it was free. I also like the sync abilities of my calendar, contacts and emails between my iPhone and Mac.

Those are the two main features that keep me paying for it. iDisk would be another if they could possibly speed it up. At moment its a little too slow for my needs.

You are using Dropbox already, yes? If not, you really need to get it.

It's SO much faster than iDisk. Free service. Free desktop software. Free iPhone app too!

Once you download their software (Mac, Windows, and Linux) it'll create a sync folder on your computer, exactly like the Mobile-Me drive works. Get the iPhone app and you're good to go. I never use my iDisk.
 
For me it is.

My wife and I keep calendars sync'd on our phones and computers - that's awfully nice...thought it can be done with free solutions, mobile me is pretty darned seamless.

Idisk access comes in handy from time to time.

The "Find my phone" feature has helped locate a phone misplaced in the house (with send tone) twice so far. The GPS location is handy when you want to know where someone is - poor mans "family map".

I've been a mobile me subscriber since the .mac days and the initial release. It's a nice service, and gets easier to pay for every year as our machines become more interconnected.
 
Love MobileMe

1. Track phone/data wipe
2. Sync calendar for all my computer/iphone and share with my wife
3. It host my website (very cheap!). I design it on my MacBook and one button to publish and host!
4. 20GB of storage for iDisk, iPhotos/movies to share with friends and family
5. I "kinda" used my MobileMe email :). I forward my gmail to MobileMe and it becomes PUSH mail instantly to my iPhone !!:D
6. Buy it on amazon or ebay for $50/year instead of $99 through Apple.
 
MobileMe is great, the only downside is it tends to be very slow when accessing it thru the internet. Otherwise it's great for syncing email, contacts, etc.
 
For me being able to sync contacts and calendar entries via the cloud across my MBP and iphone alone is worth the $99... I know I can do it with Google but its so seamless with Mobile ME and Apple products. and setting up a gallery right from iphoto is great. Other than that I dont really use Mobile Me for anything else except the occasional file on iDisk. Never needed find my iphone *knock on wood* but its good to know that it's there.

PS: I dont use the email service simply because I dont want to hand out that email address to a bunch of people only to decide one day that I dont want to renew my subscription and not have that address anymore all of a sudden.

I've always said that .Me e-mail should be free and you should be able to upgrade it to a paid MobileMe account or downgrade it back to a free one whenver you want to.

Getting people stuck by holding their address hostage is not a good business model.

I think if you buy an Apple computer sometime in your life, a MobileMe mail account should be given to you for free rest of your life.:D
 
The instant/effortless syncing of contacts, bookmarks and push email is fantastic- but what's really worth it for me is the iDisk. I use it frequently to distribute larger video files to clients and such.

Find my iPhone has come in handy once so far (I suppose that'd be worth it alone if my phone were truly lost, not just under the seat of my car)

It's worth $99 if you use it. If you don't mind syncing contacts via iTunes and already have an email- you can find cheaper alternatives to the other services.

However, I do think they should make a basic version of MobileMe free for iPhone subscribers.
 
I used it for a year - paid the premium, but didn't renew it.

I think that Google's service is just as good. The $99 price tag doesn't justify the pros.

Just because it doesn't exists for you, doesn't mean it doesn't exists. Please think before posting. I say this to fellow employees at my office, If you aren't 100% positive that it's so, then don't say it is so.
 
Most of the features you guys are mentioning really dont seem to appeal to me. I already use gmail, not hard to find a way to sync my contacts free. The only app that appealed to me was findmyiphone. Now that there is a cheaper alternative to it this is a no brainer.
