I'm about to switch to the mac, and I want to know whether I should subscribe. What do you all think?

I haven't been paying much attention to it lately since they had so many problems at launch and for a long time thereafter. I would expect it is now much more stable and more likely worth the price, esp. since the price seems to have fallen dramatically if you get it from the right place. I got mine from eBay for $32. There is no way in the world though that I would pay $99 for it.

I got the 60 day trial with my new iPhone and I have to say, it's kind of a joke (at least for me).

I don't think I'll use any of the features that come with it. I have my own hosting plan/domains already for web pages, and there are many free alternatives to the other features of mobileme.

I had already switched most of my email to gmail after the huge MobileMe launch debacle, and also switched to FireFox and Foxmarks to handle my bookmark sync, all for free. I recently bought MM from eBay mostly because it was so cheap and my subscription was about to expire; now I will have another year to decide what I will do long-term.

It Depends...

If you don't have multiple computers or an iPhone I'd say it probably isn't worth it.

I personally really like the Web Galleries, over the air sync to my iPhone (I guess I'm one of the few who has never had a problem with this), and I use the iDisk and MobileFiles on my iPhone to carry around documents.

My advice would be to get the free trial then if you like it buy a boxed copy off of ebay or amazon, you can usually get it for much cheaper than you can from Apple.

Why do you want it? If only for email and syncing bookmarks and Calendars, you could probably do all that less expensively elsewhere.

If, however, you need web hosting and online file storage in addition to email and syncing of contacts, calendars, etc. then I believe it is well worth the money, especially when you can get it for $55 on Amazon.

The best thing to do would be to sign up for a free trial and see how you like it, how much you use it, etc. Being hands on with it for a couple months is a better than any advice you'll get here.

Even $55 is too high IMHO. I got mine from eBay for $32.

As others say it depends...

As others have said... get the trial and see how you like it. 55 from Amazon, while higher than I'd like, is probably more reliable than getting it from ebay.

Personally I use it and love it... I keep calendars, contacts and iDisk synced between my mac pro and powerbook g4 (Huge difference there...) and on days I don't feel like bringing a laptop to class I can still get to all my stuff.

However I have not had any of the problems that quite a few people seem to experience. My single issue has been the web interface is fairly slow.

If your the type of person who likes software to work the way it was advertised, I'd day save your money. Apple has released Beta software and charging a steep price for it at their store. The calendar and contacts are very buggy. The photo albums seem to work well, and you do get a free email account - woop-de-doo.

When Apple gets their stuff together, if it ever happens, then MobileMe would be worth the trouble it seems to have grieved so many people.

No problem. And on balance, as I don't have an iPhone, I don't think I'll bother. Thanks all.

I personally think it is. I've had it for over 3 years now and it's incredibly simple and just works. Find my iPhone is wonderful too now with the exceptionally good GPS chip in the iPhone 4.

Right now is GREAT!

The MobileMe at launch 3 years ago was Slow and with lots of Sync problems but now (maybe late 2009 to Present) works 100% great, fast sync with all my Macs, iPod Touch and iPhone. I recommend it if you have more than 2 Apple items, Ej: 1 Mac and 1 iPhone. the more....more worth it.

but.... is it legal?

Totally legal, I ordered mine off of Amazon for $45. I don't think mobileme is worth it at all, you can do 99% of what it does for free and better, ie: google mail, microsoft skydrive/livesync, etc etc. BUT... the location and remote wiper feature are necessary in today's world. Plus I have 2 iphones and 2 ipads and one account covers them all, so I figured it was good insurance to be able to track my devices and remote wipe them if I ever needed to.

So yeah I think it's worth the $45 from Amazon, but only for the remote location/remote wipe feature.

MM has been around for a little longer than 3 years.

And no, it's not worth it until you lose your phone.

Yes, it is VERY worth it. You have perfect unified calendar that's built into your OS, and synced wirelessly, nomatter if you add it from your phone, or a computer in france.

2nd, You can send attachments to clients that simply say "Download," with no ads are garbage popups. It says there is a limit in size, but I've shared 2gb+ files no problem, and you can set your OWN sharing expiration date. Oh, and you can do all of this FROM YOUR PHONE! So I have tons of times I'm out and about, someone needs a file, and I can instantly get it for them WHILE talking to them, and they confirm they received even before we finished our conversation.

If you have ANY important information on your phone (work, bank accounts, notes, nude pics, etc), you can find & delete it remotely!!

Mail, well, simple, works great, displays images nicer than any other mail client, but nothing that special.

All-in-all, worth it for me personally, but if you just use the mail client, then obviously pass...
