Is my 21.5" iMac running louder than it should be?

Hi, me and my brother both bought the iMac 21.5" on december 26 2009, and we both had one each, but the other day he walked in my room and said, "your computer is loud compared with mine", and obv because i use mine all the time and havnt really been near his i dont notice it. I do notice a loud sound when i open an application or web page though. Can anyone tell me why mine is louder than his?

I will have a look when it gets back from apple, i have sent it away due to black line on screen. I know how to check fan speeds, but how do i check the Hdd?

Starting to think i got the dodgy iMac tbh...
 
Mine is not loud at all. I hear the HDD every now and again. Could it be possible that some of the HDD spinning noise is being transferred (from the metal body of the iMac) to the desk it's sitting on? You could place something between the stand and the desk surface to test it.
 
My old iMac was silent, I couldn't tell the difference from when it was on or off but my new 21.5 will be a lot louder due to the noise from the hdd. Sometimes certain manufactures are louder than others and even the same model side by side can be louder. Even hdd manufactures use different internals depending on the batch.
 
So do i have something to worry about?
Is it going to die?

How can i make sure that it's ok?

I'll get that iStat Pro when i get it back and check.. what else can i do?

Best thing you can do is run a series of tests. Techtool Pro 5 is very handy and you can get it for $99 or find it on less legal sites... You can figure out how to do that on your own since I'm sure somewhere in the forum rules and regs I'm not allowed to tell you.

Run a full test and see what pops. There's two main tests with the HDD you want to run. Full surface scan and a S.M.A.R.T. test. The SMART test is a lifelong diagnostic the hdd keeps of it's own vitals. Any failure in the past will show up here and can even show you segments of the drive that are under performing.

Thanks alot mate really do appriciate it, ill test fan speeds and the hdd using the program you said. Ive seen you help out alot of people in the mac sections
Can you pm me your email/msn/aim/skype or whtver so i can talk to you on that when i need help?

My iMac used to run loud, in fact usually when they run loud, its because of the HDD

I took it to the Apple store, they swapped out the HDD for a new one, and it's completely silent even if you stick you ear up to the machine. You can't hear it at all. For those who said its not possible to have an all silent machine, it is, even under heavy workloads.

I went from a crappy seagate, to another awesome seagate hard drive. In fact, my friends iMac has a WDD drive and hers is silent, but my seagate is completely silent. So try your luck and switch it out for a new hard drive.
