The screen on my iPad Pro 12.9 2015 has been starting to show significant shading towards the bottom of the screen by the home button (rhs of screen grab). Beginning to wonder if it’s about to die or if it’s normal with old age.

Any thoughts?

It’s certainly a bit irritating!

Answer: both... it's normal and about to die. Sorry to see that you're experiencing what many of us have. :(

Based on my first-hand experience and what others have reported, it starts with a sporadic unresponsiveness of the screen to touches. It then progresses to uneven backlighting in a spot about 2 inches above the home button. Some have experienced a spot that is brighter than the rest of the screen... others, dimmer.

I haven't seen one that is as severe as yours. I traded mine in as the sporadic unresponsiveness started and just as there was an ever-so-slight (nearly imperceptible) spot started to appear.

Lol my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” developed a bright spot right at the centre. Apple’s screen wasn’t that good before the 2018 redesign.

Never had any issue with mine since 2015. In January I got a new one because of the "battery replacement" (that is actually an iPad replacement) and hopefully no issue here for another 5 years at least.
The unresponsiveness and white spots are way more frequent on the second gen pro. My 10.5 has the ugly white spot
