Recently entered this MP 5,1 rabbit hole. Running Nitro+ RX 580 (with double 6 pin to 8 pin cable of course) right now.
My strategy:
  • No PSU mod (maybe later).
  • No MVC (I cannot stand a long wait).
  • Stay on Mojave as long as possible (32-bit app).
  • GTX 680 and/or R9 280X flashed as the "troubleshoot card".
  • Vega 56 as the "performance card".
  • Resell Nitro+ RX 580 once the above cards are acquired and tested.
  • No multi-boot with Windows or Linux.
Is my strategy sound? I think I would do some photography and/or 2D design, besides general Web browsing.

UPDATE:
Now I am more inclined with using High Sierra/Sierra as long as possible with an NVIDIA card. Once that falls apart, go straight to Catalina (or newer) + 5700 XT (or better).

Have you investigated if your photography and design apps are going to offer significant performance benefits on a Vega 56, vs an RX580, to be worth having to find additional power for it?

Good point. My guess is not much? I'm thinking Photoshop, Affinity, Krita, etc.

I just feel that from used pricing Vega 56 seems to offer better performance per dollar. But yeah the power situation could be troublesome...
