My 13 month old PowerBook's HD has started to make a rough scratching sound when it is in use. It never used to sound like this, and i'm afraid it might be about to fail.

It sounds as though the mechanics are rusty, if that helps? Obviously there is no way they could be rusty.

The sound isn't LOUD but it is definately not as smooth as it used to be, i've run Disk Utility, numerous times and no problems have been found.

I couldn't find the symptoms i'm experiencing in other threads, please forgive me if this is normal as i'm not familiar with the sound.

Concerned!

Rich.

Hi fatsofor ...

I think you should back up anything you value as soon as possible ...in case the drive goes ...

That sound usually proceeds a drive failure .. at least it did in my case ...

I hope that's not your situation but better to be safe than sorry..
