Is My HD Dying? (24" iMac 2007)

My problems all started a few months ago when I was having a lot of problems with things running slowly, so I used Disk Utility to check the disk for errors. It found some. So I ran the repair stuff from the operating system disk, but the problem came back. So then I said to hell with it and reformatted, installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard and migrated my stuff from my Time Machine backup.

All was well and worked like the computer was brand new.

Then I decided to use boot camp so I could play a computer game. The problem is that the windows partition keeps becoming corrupt. I have tried XP, Vista and 7. It works for a week, then wont boot windows. 7 has a lovely feature that will repair disk errors, but that too only works for a few days before the problem comes back.

So is my HD dying? Is there a good way to check besides dragging it down to an Apple store?

if your computer was fine until you did a bootcamp....dont you think your insall is the problem?

It could be that a certain part of the disc is damaged, and when you reformatted the HDD, it started from the inside->out/outside->in and eventually if you fill it up enough it would reach the damaged bit.

I suggest to simply get Apple to look at it, make sure that they don't give you any of that **** they chat about at the Genius bar - some Apple stores I have been in they are useless and treat you like you are an idiot - others actually get the problem fixed.

Not sure where you are from, but if you plan on going to Apple Store, Kingston, London just don't. You will not get anything sorted out there.

Age, heat and sound.

How old is you Mac.
If the HDD is older than 4 years then it could be dying due to old age (not a very long life).
Also, how hot is your Mac normally?
If it is anything like 70 degrees (C) then I suggest you install smcFanControl.
Now here is the killer clue, if your HDD is making strange noises then it could be about to crash.
So go on the net and look for the death sounds of your HDD type.
If they match, then do a mass backup and send the HDD for a replacement.
