Hi, first post here. I recently installed a new 1TB hard drive to my 20 inch iMac. After struggling to get the machine opened. When I pulled out the inverter cable for the LCD, one of the wires got very slightly exposed. I double checked the wire and it looked quite OK. Didn't think much of it and put everything back together.

When I switched it on, there were several blue sparks which tripped off the power supply in my flat. Then a burning smell, so I opened it up again to check for damage. The only part with ‘burn marks’ is the power supply unit. But the machine doesn’t switch on any more.

I'm hoping it’s only the power supply that’s affected. What is the likelihood of major damage to the Logic Board and LCD panel?

Help very much appreciated. Thanx in advance!

Yeah but is there any other way to find out the extent of damage. To save myself the cost of sending it in.

I hope its just a case of getting a new power supply.

Interesting enough the same exact thing happened to me this morning. I just ordered a PSU from eBay so I hope and pray to God that's all it is. Data is OK, just Mac won't turn on at all. I can see the burn marks on the power supply.
