Is my ipad defective?

I just picked up a new ipad pro and it took me jumping through hoops to finally get it to transfer my data from my old iPad Air to the Pro. During the upgrade process the Pro would hand, or you'd get the cartwheel of death if you tried to install using iCloud. It was just the old iPad Air, the lightning connector is on its way out so the unit just charges and won't sync with my computers. That made getting a backup via iTunes rather hard.

As the iPad Pro would lock up you'd need to reboot the unit to try again and you'd get the following screen.

This to me looks wrong, but as soon as you put in your passcode, the screen would return to normal. I did eventually dig out an old windows laptop and managed to get iTunes for windows loaded and got the iPad Air to backup to that, and then as I had a usba-usbc cable, I got the new iPad Pro to install from the backup and it seems to work fine.

I don't want to keep an ipad if it's defective, and would rather get it replaced if it's bad. But I don't know if this is just normal??

Sounds like maybe an issue with the backup in iCloud. If it's working fine with the backup from iTunes then I wouldn't worry about it being defective.

Second that ! Doesn't sound like a defective iPad ! Those are not the symptoms of a defective iPad !!

It is generally best to setup as a new iPad and not restore from a backup, even though it is more work to setup from scratch. Sometimes, “junk” from the old one can cause issues on the new one.

Are they supposed to have the black shadow bit in the middle of the screen? that is the part that I am more worried about. Not sure if it's part of the screen that is defective, or just a part that doesn't have a backlight and in the partial load of the IOS the rest of the backlight is not on bright enough that it makes a shadow section.

Is that shadow always visible, or only on the underneath the passcode keypad? When the passcode keypad comes up, whatever is currently on the screen is supposed to be shown blurred under the keypad.

My guess is it’s the Apple logo blurred behind the keypad.

I wouldn’t backup a new iPad Pro at all.. I would do a fresh setup, and simply restore your apps and photos linked to that Apple ID. You can run in to little quirks using a backup.

I am pretty much stuck with doing a restore as there is too much VERY important data associated with some apps that needed to get moved over. I don't know of any way to preserve that data going forward without just doing a backup restore. I upgraded my iPad to a new one as the old iPad was not working very well.. the bad lightning port was the icing kicker on the cake.

The iPad has setup and seems to be working fine. I have setup faceID so I don't see the enter passcode screen. it doesn't give the dark shadow in the middle on anything else so far. I guess it is working.

The only other question I would have is to do with battery life. On the 5 year old iPad Air, I would generally get 2 days between charges. This iPad seem to not even last a day. Now I did get an Apple Pencil2 that had no charge out the box, so that was plugged onto the top and charged to 100%. Does that Apple Pencil take much power? Should keeping it docked at the top be avoided? I haven't really been doing all that much with the iPad, not more than I would on any other regular day. Just wondering what others have experienced with a pencil installed on the Pro?

Which one did you buy?

Since the Pencil 2 charges conductively rather than via a direct connection, there will be a lot of energy wasted for sure.

But as you wrote, things should normalize over time. We also tend to use new devices much more in the first couple of days which can lead to the perception of lower battery life.
