I purchased a 9.7" iPad Pro from Best Buy. It was sold as new. When I got it home and was setting it up on iTunes, it asks me "Would you like to set up this iPad as a new iPad or restore all of your information from a previous backup?" Then it lets me select from two choices; set up as a new iPad, or Restore from this backup, dr07679's iPhone, last backed up 1/1/2015. So naturally that confused me. I have never had an iPad before, and there has never been anything but my iPhone hooked up to my iTunes. So, is Best Buy selling refurbished iPads as new? I took a screen shot of their ad, and nowhere on there does it say refurbished.

That screen only shows options from your account though. It's not as though someone else used it, erased it and then you'd see their ID as an option for restore. You connect it (iCloud or iTunes) and it gives you options available from that account.

Also, that backup was from 2015, which is before the 2016 release date of the 9.7" iPad Pro. Perhaps an old device on your account?

You can check this after setup by installing a battery app, that shows cycle counts.
Alternatively you can install "coconut battery" on your mac (if you own one), connect the ipad to the mac and check for cycle counts.
On new devices cycle count is usually 0.

Common practice at BB to repackage returned items. I once was about to buy a NEW TV and I had a feeling it wasn't NEW got home and discovered it had NO Remote. I went back to the store and got the GM and returned the TV and got $100 off an actual new TV.

As i know the the ipad is recognize old backup from the pc and not from the ipad himself

You can check when the ipad has been activated for the first time in apple website and then you can know if you are the first one or its repackge

I think it's most likely that the iPad is new. Those are common questions when connecting a new device (or newly wiped device) to iTunes for the first time. You can check if the dr07679 backup is in your computer in iTunes, Preferences, Devices.

Put your serial number in on Apple's website to check warranty status.

It should expire the same day you turned on and setup your iPad but in 2018 if it was a truly sealed by Apple device.

There's no way BestBuy could meddle with Apple's system in that regard. But it sounds like this was an old iPhone backup as others have said.

If someone bought and then returned a iPad shortly thereafter, there would not be any indication on apple.com.

I didn't realise that!

I thought that the store would have to send it back to Apple to be refurbished or what have you before ever reaching the hands of another customer!

I'd be pretty mad if they tried to sell me an open box iPad without selling. Or even an open boxed toaster! It's the principle!

That's the issue of the thread, the OP thinks he bought an iPad that someone else bought, returned and BestBuy re-shrink wrapped and sold as new.

Exactly. Shrink wrap and shrink wrap machines are available everywhere. I even saw someone in Office Depot shrink wrapping a laptop back in 2003. Almost all fleabay fraudsters use them. Buyer beware these days.

Except that "dr07679" is not the name of my iPhone.
dr07679 at one time or another has connected their phone to your computer and created a backup. Could have easily happened in the background if the proper checkboxes are ticked and the phone was plugged in to charge. Actually, at some point someone would have had to say yes, but still very plausible.

If the iPad had the original glue plastic wrap, it would be nearly impossible to duplicate it.
Just as an aside the iPad Pro 9.7 is 1.5 year old tech and no longer available via Apple, so it could have been returned to Apple, sold to Best Buy and someone at Apple messed up?
