Is my Iphone 32GB 3GS Completely useless now?

My phone got stuck yesterday, it was jailbreaked 3.0 and unlocked. So i did a restore through iTunes and it restored it to 3.1

Now my phone is locked, meaning i cant use my SIM and also it cant be jailbreaked.

Is my phone completely useless now or is there something i can do?

Atleast is there anyway to make it unlocked so i can use it as a phone?

Thanks.

^ Nice help greedy.

Is there not a way to restore it from a previous backup that WAS jailbroken?

From what a friend of mine said 3.1 is capable to be jailbroken but the radio cannot be the same from 3.1 but from 3.0.1.

Check it out before just giving it to someone looking to be an opportunist. Don't give up so easily.

you can downgrade back to 3.0 or 3.0.1, but can't downgrade your baseband. So even if you go back to 3.0 or 3.0.1, it can't be unlocked.

Just wait for the Dev Team to come up for something. They're working on it, so just be patient. If you CAN downgrade to 3.0, then find out how and just jailbreak it and use it like an iPod Touch until the Dev Team releases something.

this is why the dev team says to avoid apple's IPSWs. had you restored using a pwned firmware file (which has been available for a couple of days now) you'd just be on 3.1 jailbroken and unlocked.

Some incorrect answers here.

The phone is a 3GS, Apple quit signing the 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW's so the owner can not downgrade the firmware from 3.1 unless he/she got their 3.0/3.0.1 SHSH files stored on Cydia quite some time ago.

Your options: Run the phone with an official carrier sim if available, use it as an iPod or as a paperweight.

The DevTeam is working on a JB for 3GS phones on 3.1, but it is very, very unlikely there will ever be an unlock.

Why doesn't someone that works in an Orange Center shop in France or in the belgium provider of iphones, that have the official unlock software from apple and send it to the dev team so they can take a look at how it unlocks?

Damn these people working in telephone shops are @#}à]{

The official unlock isn't done on the iPhone itself. It's done by Apple when you restore/activate your iPhone at home. It connects to an Apple server and verifies if your iPhone is factory unlocked. Basically, the Dev-Team can't fake it because it's a process that's done for each individual iPhone. The codes change based on the phone. The people that work at those stores aren't even able to share the unlock.

There is actually hope. Greenpois0n (www.greenpois0n.com) is said to be the key to unlock 3.1 firmware, also on phones that come with 3.1 firmware out-of-the-box.

So let's just wait and see...

If you lock something, it can always be unlocked. You just have to have the key. Someone, somewhere, always has the key. Sometimes it takes a while to find the key - but it's always out there!

it's a complicated algorithm unlock process done thru iTunes. Those companies would be wide open to a huge civil suit if they would share that outside of their company.

Kind of off topic. I've been jailbreaking the original iPhone since i got it but i've updated to the 3GS. It came with 3.0.1 which i unlocked and jailbreaked.

I want to upgrade to 3.1 though pwnage.

Assuming it goes all ok. What happens if for some reason i brick the phone and need to do a DFU restore. Will the hacked 3.1 IPSW work?

EDIT: I'm asking because all the notes say you have to upgrade from a hacked 3.0.x and i can't go back from 3.1 because Apple won't sign 3.0 for me.

I'm sure you got your answer in one of these threads that was posted, if not, unfortunately no you can't use it as a phone unless you go through the specific carrier.

You can downgrade if your info is saved on Cydia, but downgrading isn't going to downgrade the firmware version, which is what you need to downgrade in order to use the phone as a phone.

So as of now, your options are very limited to using the phone strictly as an iPod device.

The Dev team may come out with something down the road to unlock, but there is certainly no time frame or guarantee for that matter..

As long as you don't do the restore and install the "official" 3.1 through iTunes..

If you do a restore, make sure you restore the cooked 3.1 ipsw that pwnage created..

Thanks for the reply. My main concern is because of this line:

"PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1"

What happens if you have an un-pwn'd 3.0? Or in the scenario i posed, if you brick your phone and it needs a full restore. Can you restore or is it only upgrade from a pwn'd version. It's not very clear.

Well something similar happened to me, the first cooked ipsw I created from Pwnage, I went to iTunes went to restore it, but I put the phone in DFU mode instead of recovery mode, so I did restore of the cooked ipsw and of course it came up with an error because I forgot to put the phone into recover mode instead of DFU mode, so I accidentally hit restore in iTunes and it started downloading the official, 3.1 update, I immediately cancelled it out.

Went back to Pwnage, created another 3.1 cooked ipsw, put the phone into recovery mode and restored through iTunes using the 2nd cooked ipsw and it worked fine..

I probably didn't have to create the 2nd ipsw, but I er'd on the side of caution..

If something happens to your 3GS, and you don't have your SHSH files on Cydia or you didn't save the custom Restore IPSW you created with PT, you can only restore to official 3.1.

Apple quit signing the 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW files for the 3GS, so iTunes will not allow you to select those.

maybe you could sell it to someone who doesnt' care about jailbreaking it.. maybe lose a bit of money and get another one?
