I've been drooling over the iPod since its introduction. Finally, after all this time, I convinced my wife that we should splurge.

The iPod arrived on Friday (ordered it on Thursday) and it worked flawlessly until Sunday night. This is what happened. I had it plugged into my car stereo and was grooving along when I decided to look at the screen to check out the name of the tune. I turned on the backlight and the thing froze. No button would work, the backlight stayed on, and the little hard drive kept spinning. This went on for about an hour and twenty minutes. (The metal back was quite warm by this point.) Then, I played around with the "hold" switch and it decided to start working again. That was when I pulled it out of my pocket and complained to my PC-loving friend who had been considering the iPod as his next purchase.

18 hours later and still no problems.

Has anyone else experience this freezing? Should I take it back?

Comments/Advice, please.

Re: iPod freezing

The only time I have experienced this is when I take my iPod from temperature extremes, i.e. from cold to warm. Was there a temperature change when your iPod froze?

Ummm...yes, sort of. It was nice and snug in my home then I took it in the car. (Yesterday was quite chilly- around freezing.) However, it worked fine for 40 minutes and then it clunked out. If it had malfunctioned just as I went outside it would be more understandable.

Thanks for your comments nonetheless. How did you eventually get yours working again? By leaving the "hold" function enabled for an extended period of time?

You need to turn the hold button on and then turn it off, then hold Menu and Play for five seconds and that will perform a hard reset of the iPod. That has always cleared up my freezing issues (which don't happen that often). Where did you get the iPod at? If it happens again you might want to take it back but this isn't a common problem for iPod's. Other than temperature issues, mine might have frozen once or twice in the five months that I have had it. I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for that tip. Very valuable info. (My manual isn't in English and I didn't bother downloading one.)

I bought it from the Apple Korea online store, by the way.

Again, thanks heaps.

My 2nd gen 10gig has frozen a couple of times, but turning it off by holding the play/pause button down for a few seconds, then re-booting has always worked.

All computers crash, my phone crashed yesterday:D

I suppose it was bound to happen once. It's worked flawlessly since. Now all I have to do is pick up some of those cool accessories.
