It looks as if you could go with a S/M. That is what I chose, and it fits well. If you can get into an Apple store, see if you can return/swap for the S/M. Also, if you are considering getting other bands, you can always have Apple size your wrist.

This is me exactly! I'm usually a M/L with my 44mm, Apple Watch 4 band so I got a Midnight Leather Link M/L band for my Apple Watch 7 and I was astonished that i twas too long! So I picked up the S/M and while lengthwise it is indeed shorter, the best fit I get has "4 magnets" free from the top of the watch to the end of the band. I guess it's doable but I wish I get a tighter fit and get one more magnet but I dunno. It generally feels too loose. I was thinking the easy snap on and snap off would attune to the size of my wrist but it doesn't look like it.

It looks fine. I suppose that means you have more magnet protection.

I'd guess it's all up to personal choice, and you could use the smaller one too if you'd prefer less looparound. :)

It looks fine. Although it looks like you have small wrists so choosing M/L seems odd unless that's the only size you could find..

Just came home from Apple Store today and I switched to S/M one and it’s perfect!
